Harlem Children’s Zone started with one purpose that was the most ambitious and audacious in U.S. history: end intergenerational poverty in Central Harlem and lead the way for other long-distressed communities nationwide and around the world to do the same. The organization has scaled its pioneering place-based model to serve tens of thousands of scholars and families annually within a 100-plus block “Zone” in Central Harlem; closed the achievement gap at HCZ Promise Academy Charter Schools; and helped more than 1,900 scholars graduate from college, earn their degrees, and build bright futures.
