Test Engineer
Position Summary
The Test Engineer is responsible for supporting, maintaining, and improving test processes for printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) in a high-mix, low-to-medium volume manufacturing environment. This role will support in-circuit, functional, boundary scan, system-level, and environmental testing while helping ensure products meet customer, quality, and Class 3 aerospace manufacturing requirements.
The Test Engineer will work closely with Test Technicians, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Program Management, and Production teams to troubleshoot failures, support production builds, improve test coverage, analyze test data, validate fixtures, and drive continuous improvement across the test process.
This position requires strong hands-on technical ability, attention to detail, and the ability to support both production test execution and engineering-level problem solving.
Key Responsibilities
Test Engineering Support
- Support PCBA test operations, including:
- In-Circuit Test (ICT)
- Functional Test (FCT)
- Boundary Scan, as applicable
- Burn-in and environmental testing, as required
- System-level or box-build testing, as applicable
- Review and support test procedures, work instructions, customer requirements, and production travelers
- Verify test setups, fixtures, cabling, software, and configurations prior to production use
- Support production teams with test-related questions, failures, and process issues
- Monitor test performance, first-pass yield, recurring failures, and throughput concerns
- Ensure test results are accurately recorded in ERP/MES systems such as Voyager or equivalent
Troubleshooting & Failure Analysis
- Troubleshoot failed PCBAs using standard lab and diagnostic equipment, including:
- Digital multimeters
- Oscilloscopes
- Power supplies
- Signal generators
- Logic analyzers or other test equipment, as applicable
- Interpret schematics, assembly drawings, test procedures, and customer documentation
- Identify and document failure symptoms, failure modes, and test observations
- Support root cause analysis and corrective action activities
- Work with technicians and engineers to determine whether failures are related to product design, assembly defects, fixture issues, software, process variation, or documentation gaps
- Provide clear technical feedback to Quality, Manufacturing Engineering, and Program teams
Fixture, Equipment & Process Support
- Support test fixture setup, validation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
- Assist with test equipment calibration status, readiness, and proper usage
- Help identify fixture reliability issues and recommend improvements
- Support implementation of new test equipment, software updates, and process changes
- Assist in developing or improving test methods, test instructions, and production support documentation
- Participate in continuous improvement efforts to improve test efficiency, reduce retest rates, and increase throughput
NPI & Production Support
- Support New Product Introduction activities from prototype through production release
- Review customer test requirements and assist with test readiness planning
- Support first article builds, pilot builds, and engineering builds
- Collect and analyze test data during early production runs
- Provide feedback on manufacturability, testability, fixture design, and process flow
- Help transition products from engineering/NPI into repeatable production test processes
Documentation & Quality
- Maintain accurate and organized records of test results, troubleshooting notes, and engineering observations
- Follow IPC-A-610, J-STD-001, and applicable Class 2/Class 3 workmanship requirements
- Adhere to ESD protocols, safety requirements, and quality system procedures
- Support audit readiness through complete and accurate documentation
- Assist with customer, internal, and quality system investigations as needed
- Support engineering change implementation and documentation updates
Qualifications
Required
