Counsel, Commercial & Marketing:
The Counsel will be an integral part of the legal team, working closely with the Associate General Counsel - Commercial, Managing Counsels - Commercial, Paralegal - Commercial, and broader legal department to advise LA28’s business and strategic partners on legal matters. This position will leverage negotiation, relationship-building, critical-thinking and communication skills to support the legal needs for the commercial teams of the organization, including sponsorship agreements, supply agreements, operational contracts, licensing arrangements, activation agreements, marketing and content-creation support, legal memoranda, and summaries. This position will report to the Associate General Counsel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support senior members of legal department on identified business transactions and legal matters.
- Steady stream of both supervised and self-directed analytical work, meetings, and decision-making, including preparing, reviewing and negotiating all varieties of legal documents including but not limited to sponsorship agreements, supply agreements, activation agreements, licensing arrangements, confidentiality agreements, waivers, consents, corporate governance documents and legal memoranda or other correspondence and strategic projects.
- Perform significant projects / duties as assigned by the Associate General Counsel.
- Assist with the management of communications and relationships with LA28’s business and strategic partners.
- Help implement legal team policies, procedures, and standard operating practices.
- Supervise, monitor and assist in the career development of all subordinate attorneys and paralegals.
- Review and understand all relevant corporate/stakeholder documents (including Host City Contract, Olympic Charter, Code of Ethics, etc.).
- Work with outside counsel on matters requiring representation.
- Ensure compliance with applicable international, federal, state and local laws and regulations.
- Keep current on industry-wide legal trends and developments.
Background & Requirements:
- Minimum 3+ years’ legal experience.
- Concrete transactional contract drafting and negotiating experience..
- Background in supporting the commercial needs of a sports organization, including experience with high stakes sponsorships and servicing commercial partners.
- Experience in sports, media, entertainment, live events, and international transactions is a plus (but not required!).
- Prior law firm and/or in house experience.
While experience in these areas is nice to have, we also look for candidates with intellectual curiosity and a demonstrated ability to learn quickly to round out areas where a candidate may not have depth of experience. Education:
- Undergraduate degree from an accredited university.
- Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA accredited law school.
- License to practice law, be in good standing with the California State Bar and have the ability to practice law in California.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Available to work onsite in our Downtown Los Angeles-based office.
- The majority of work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment.
- The LA28 office is an open floorplan working environment; employees must be able to work efficiently in an open cubicle environment.
- Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods.
- Local candidates preferred.
- Perform other duties as required; the role will evolve over time and may include operational responsibilities during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The annual base salary range for this position is $120,000-$155,000. The pay scale provided is the range that LA28 reasonably expects to pay as starting base compensation for this role. All LA28 compensation remains subject to final determination based on individual candidate qualifications, experience, or other reasonable criteria consistent with LA28’s operational business needs and applicable law.
