Medical Director

The Opportunity

This is an executive leadership position responsible for guiding the clinical direction and ensuring the quality and integrity of all psychiatric services within the organization. This high-impact role is evenly divided between strategic administration and direct patient care (50% / 50%). The Medical Director serves as the primary medical advisor to the Executive Leadership team and is central to upholding standards for person-centered, trauma-informed treatment. This position reports directly to the Executive Director/CEO.

Key Responsibilities

  • Clinical & Administrative Leadership:
    • Establish the organization’s general medical policy and advise the Executive Director/CEO on matters of quality of care and program growth.
    • Supervise and mentor all medical staff, including staff psychiatrists and Nurse Practitioners.
    • Lead interdisciplinary collaboration, consult on complex diagnostic issues, and ensure all medical records and agency practices meet regulatory compliance (e.g., OMH, OASAS).
  • Direct Patient Care:
    • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and medication assessments.
    • Oversee the use of psychotropic medications, provide patient education on prescriptions, and administer parenteral medications as required.
    • Coordinate integrated care plans, including collaborating with primary care physicians for clients with co-existing physical health conditions.
    • Provide crisis intervention, sign 9.45 orders, and offer cross-coverage for continuity of care.
    • Complete specialized evaluations for external systems (e.g., judicial, Social Security, and County DSS).

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Education & License: Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited school and a completed residency in Child, Adolescent, or Adult Psychiatry. Must possess a current, unrestricted New York State license and a valid DEA registration.
  • Experience: Minimum of five years of experience in a mental health setting. Previous experience in supervisory or clinical leadership roles is preferred.
  • Certification: Board Certification in Child, Adolescent, Adult, or Addiction Psychiatry is highly desirable.
  • Core Competencies: Demonstrated ability to provide positive leadership, sound clinical judgment in high-pressure situations, and proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR).
