Junior Software Developer
Industrial Placement (48 Weeks)
Salary £26,300 per annum (FTE)
At Weatherbys, there is a genuine focus on providing the highest level of personal service and maintaining close relationships with all our clients. We not only look after our clients but also their families, many of whom have valued our support for generations.
We are always looking for great individuals to join our teams and have an open and lively environment to work in, with a friendly workforce who will offer you a warm welcome.
We are seeking a Junior Developer to join our Application Development team.
What you will do
As a Software Developer on a 48‑week industrial placement, you will join an established development team and contribute to the delivery and support of real production systems. This role is designed to provide structured learning, practical experience, and professional development under the supervision of experienced engineers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting the development, testing, and maintenance of modern applications across frontend and backend components.
- Writing clear, maintainable, and well-structured code under guidance, with a strong focus on learning industry best practices.
- Assisting with the implementation of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes as part of a wider delivery team.
- Participating in the full software development lifecycle, including requirements refinement, development, code review, testing, deployment, and support.
- Working within an Agile delivery environment, taking part in stand‑ups, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives.
- Learning how to use version control, development pipelines and deployment tooling in a professional setting.
- Collaborating with developers, testers, and product stakeholders to understand how technical solutions support business needs.
- Gradually increasing responsibility and autonomy over the course of the placement, aligned to individual development progress.
This role is intended to provide meaningful, hands‑on experience rather than purely observational work.
Why join us?
- This placement offers exposure to real commercial systems and projects, providing valuable experience that directly supports future graduate employment.
- You will receive hands‑on mentoring from experienced developers who actively support learning through guidance, feedback, and code reviews – including a former placement student who now work for the Bank full-time.
- The role provides experience with modern software development practices, tools, and technologies commonly used across the industry.
- You will work as a full member of the development team, contributing to live systems rather than isolated training exercises.
- The placement is structured to support professional growth, helping you build confidence, technical competence, and workplace skills over a full academic year.
- You will gain insight into how software engineering operates within a professional, regulated, and quality focused environment.
- Successful completion of the placement may support future graduate level opportunities, subject to performance and business needs.
What we are looking for
This role is suitable for students who are motivated to learn and develop as professional software engineers.
Essential criteria:
- Current undergraduate student at Edinburgh Napier University, undertaking a third-year industrial placement as part of a computing related degree (e.g. Computer Science, Software Engineering, or similar).
- Fundamental programming knowledge gained through university study, coursework, or personal projects.
- Understanding of web technologies (such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) or a strong interest in web-based development.
- Willingness to learn modern development frameworks, backend concepts, and cloud-based systems.
- Familiarity with, or interest in learning, version control systems (e.g. git).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- A proactive attitude, curiosity, and willingness to ask questions and learn from feedback.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
Desirable (but not essential):
- Exposure to JavaScript or TypeScript frameworks through coursework or personal projects.
- Exposure to/experience of AI technologies and related development.
- Awareness of Agile development methodologies.
- Interest in full‑stack development, cloud platforms, or modern DevOps practices.
