Job Description Summary

Software Engineer will lead technical development and delivery at Team and sometimes Lab level. They can be a Line Manager who will act as co-lead with the Team PO for overall delivery. In these cases, they will be responsible for overall tech delivery, line management & app ownership alongside their own software engineering output.. Others will operate as Individual Contributors, who are specialists in particular technology areas and will be narrower and deeper in focus.

    We're the API & Digital Services Platform within Lloyds Banking Group and this role seats in one of the three labs that make up this platform i.e., the API lab.

    The API & Digital Services Platform’s vision is to enable smarter API & SOE lead innovation whilst ensuring resilient digital services today.

    This exciting opportunity is within the API Lab for a Software Engineer.  As the Software Engineer you'll lead, direct and shape approaches to solving technical challenges and translating business requirements into technical solutions. You will work in a highly collaborative way to drive efforts to create, build, support and improve our software working closely with the product and engineering teams with lots of exciting new challenges. You'll be a core contributor to ensure good quality and engineering practices are followed in accordance with engineering transformation strategy.

    You can expect to be doing…

  • Assist the Lead software engineer in the technical development and delivery at team, and lab level.
  • Be an active participant in jointly owning applications developed by your teams in line with strategy, risk management, quality controls, cost and alignment with group technology strategy.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve technical issues and challenges that arise during the software development lifecycle. 
  • Be part of a modern engineering culture of delivering high quality, automated, secure & resilient software. 
  • Help in adopting best engineering practices like Test Driven Development, code reviews, Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery. 
  • Be a team player who can build relationships and collaborate productively with other teams across a variety of domains

    As a minimum to be considered, we would like to see demonstrated experience of:

  • Strong experience with Apigee Hybrid, IBM API Connect, or Kong (at least one platform in depth).
  • API Management Expertise – Strong experience with Apigee Hybrid, IBM API Connect, or Kong (in-depth knowledge of at least one platform).
  • Cloud Proficiency – Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including Compute Engine, Kubernetes/GKE, and IAM.
  • API Design – Skilled in RESTful API design and OpenAPI/Swagger specifications.
  • DevOps & Automation – Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker), and orchestration (Kubernetes).
  • Security – Familiarity with OAuth2, JWT, TLS/mTLS protocols.
  • Monitoring & Logging – Experience with observability tools for performance and reliability.
  • Programming & Scripting – Strong skills in Python, Bash, and Git-based workflows.
  • Backend Development – Solid understanding of Java 8+, Spring Boot, and Hibernate.
  • Cloud & IaC – Experience with GCP, GKE, and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform).
  • Build & DevOps Tools – Proficiency with Git, Maven, Jenkins CI/CD, Nexus, and SonarQube.
  • Database & Testing – Knowledge of SQL/NoSQL databases, basic Unix/Linux skills, and TDD using JUnit.

  • Hybrid & Multi-Cloud Expertise – Experience in deploying and managing solutions across multi-cloud or hybrid environments.
  • API Monetization & Developer Experience – Knowledge of API monetization strategies and best practices for enhancing developer experience.
  • Reliability Engineering – Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles to ensure scalability and operational resilience.
  • Test Automation – Hands-on experience with automated testing frameworks, including BDD, mocking, and contract testing.
