Overview of the Role We are looking for an experienced MS SQL Server Database Administrator responsible for managing and maintaining production-critical database environments in a 24x7 setup. The role involves the administration of Microsoft SQL Server and PostgreSQL databases.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Ensure all database servers are backed up in line with defined RPO and RTO objectives.
- Regularly test database restores to validate Disaster Recovery readiness.
- Configure and manage High Availability solutions, including Always On Availability Groups, Replication, Log Shipping, and Clustering.
- Monitor database health, performance metrics, error logs, blocking sessions, and deadlocks.
- Troubleshoot production incidents, including after-hours support when required.
- Install, configure, patch, and upgrade SQL Server and PostgreSQL instances.
- Manage database security, including roles, permissions, and compliance requirements.
- Develop and maintain ETL/SSIS jobs for data integration and transformation.
- Perform database migration from MS SQL Server / IBM Db2 to PostgreSQL, including data validation and performance benchmarking.
- Analyze and resolve performance issues related to indexing, query execution plans, server configuration, and resource utilization.
- Implement and fine-tune monitoring and alerting systems to reduce noise and enable proactive issue resolution.
- Deploy database changes in coordination with development and infrastructure teams.
- Maintain detailed documentation of database architecture, configurations, SOPs, and operational procedures.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (preferred).
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in Microsoft SQL Server administration.
- 1+ year of PostgreSQL database administration experience.
- Minimum 2+ years managing production-critical databases in 24x7 environments.
- Strong expertise in High Availability solutions (Always On, Replication, Log Shipping, Clustering, Mirroring).
- Experience with backup and recovery management and Disaster Recovery planning.
- Strong performance tuning skills, including query optimization, indexing strategies, and execution plan analysis.
- Hands-on experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
- Experience in cross-platform database migration (MSSQL / DB2 to PostgreSQL).
- Solid understanding of system tables, schema design, indexing, and partitioning.
- Knowledge of PostgreSQL internals, including WAL, VACUUM, replication, pg dump, and restore processes.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in high-pressure production environments.
