Project Engineer II

RK&K is seeking a motivated and creative Traffic Project Engineer to join our highly successful traffic group in our Fairfax, Virginia office. RK&K offers a flexible work environment, has consistently been ranked a “Best Place to Work” year after year.

As a Traffic Project Engineer with RK&K you will work alongside and collaborate closely with one of the largest, most talented groups of traffic engineers and transportation professionals in the industry. You will play a crucial role within our team, developing traffic engineering designs to improve transportation systems throughout the region. Our projects focus on improving operations and safety for motorized and non-motorized modes of travel, providing healthy and livable communities, and implementing technology-based transportation improvements.

Essential Functions

• Perform a variety of tasks, including transportation planning studies, traffic operations and safety analysis, traffic engineering design plans and preliminary engineering design  
• Support projects for all modes of travel including highway, bus, rail, bicycle and pedestrian in urban, suburban and rural environments  
• Complete studies and develop high quality traffic reports with limited direction and be able to clearly, professionally present that information to our clients on site and virtually  
• Review documentation and design plans for traffic control devices, including traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, temporary traffic control, lighting, and Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS)  
• Utilize traffic software and modeling tools to simulate and analyze traffic patterns, capacity, and performance of networks
• Stay up to date with the latest advancements in traffic engineering practices, technology and industry trends
• Prepare technical reports and presentations and present to clients and public stakeholders 

Required Skills and Experience 

• Four to eight (4-8) years of progressive experience in traffic engineering
• Exceptional writing, verbal communication and presentation skills, including public speaking  
• Experience with Highway Safety Manual, Highway Capacity Manual and AASHTO guidelines   
• Travel Forecasting experience  
• Proficient experience with HCS, SIDRA, Synchro/SimTraffic and VISSIM   
• Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering or related   
• Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.)   

Preferred Skills and Experience 

• Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering 
• Certified Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE)
