Overview
The primary purpose of this position is to help, by team effort, to promote our client so that it merits a reputation as the most prominent and influential accounting practice and complete practical business adviser in our state and the District.
This is achieved by providing a range of accounting, assurance, and advisory skills that contribute to individual service to clients and maintain the professional reputation and growth of the practice.

Responsible To
The Junior Accountant is accountable to the partners of our client’s Limited, or in their absence, the appointed manager.

Individual Objectives (Standards and Expectations)
- To have the ability to complete accounting tasks to a standard consistent with the level of time and experience in chartered accounting
- To have thorough knowledge of work papers and the ability to plan and organise work according to specifications
- To work with clients to understand their business and accounting practices to maintain a high level of service
- To establish good working relationships with clients and the client’s team members
- To demonstrate a practical working knowledge of the firm’s accounting procedures
- To identify opportunities to add value to clients’ businesses by providing additional services
- To work as part of the team and manage own workflow and responsibilities to enhance team performance
- To actively contribute to the continuous improvement of the firm as a whole
Junior Accountant
Key Duties
- To undertake special assignments as required
- Preparation of Financial Statements and Taxation Returns
- Preparation of GST / PAYE / FBT / RWT Returns
- Monthly Reporting
- Responding to client queries
- Responding to Inland Revenue Department and other agency queries
Key Duties (Standards and Expectations)
Special Assignments
- Willingly undertake special assignments as delegated by managers and partners, necessary to the efficient functioning of the practice and sustainability of workloads
- Prioritise and manage special assignments in consultation with your manager
Preparation of Financial Statements and Taxation Returns
- Prepare coding of work and elementary client workpapers for annual financial statements and taxation returns for all categories of practice clients, from job allocation stage to review stage
- Finalisation of financial statements and taxation returns following client interviews
- Includes monthly, quarterly, and bi-annual accounting for some clients
- All work performed under the oversight of a designated manager
- Training will be provided to enable graduate-level work to be processed competently and efficiently to review stage
Preparation of GST / PAYE / FBT / RWT Returns
- Prepare client GST, PAYE, FBT, and RWT returns in accordance with practice policies and systems
- Obtain a working knowledge through continuing education
- Prepare returns to a junior level with manager oversight
Monthly Reporting
- Prepare monthly reporting in accordance with client procedures and systems on a timely basis to review stage
- Prepare letters to clients with copies of monthly reports
- Provide advice to clients in line with expertise on system usage
- Set up and provide training on accounting software as required
- Provide ongoing support to clients in their use of accounting software
Responding to Client Queries
- Respond appropriately and in a timely manner to client queries and concerns
Responding to Inland Revenue Department and Other Agency Queries
- Check Inland Revenue Department queries and assessments
- Deal with discrepancies in a timely manner under manager supervision
Authority
- Contact with government and other agencies (including Inland Revenue Department, ACC, NZICA, and other institutions) may be made without prior consultation with the manager
- All correspondence to be signed by a partner unless otherwise instructed

- Budgeted total hours worked per year
- Budgeted chargeable hours worked per year
- Completion of assignments within budgeted time, assessed by quality and quantity of output
- Other individual goals as agreed with partner or manager

- Uniforms are not provided; simple and presentable dress is expected

- Staff presentation contributes to clients’ first impression of the practice

- Absolute honesty with clients, team members, partners, and all associated parties
- Tact and patience, even under difficult circumstances
- Excellent telephone techniques, including:
- Cheerful greeting
- Reducing background noise
- Prompt handling of complaints (escalating serious matters to manager or partner)
- Avoiding discussions with others while on a call
- Returning calls when promised
- Closing conversations with a simple “thank you for calling”
- Care with spelling and grammar in all external correspondence
- Avoid any action that could bring the practice, its management, or staff into disrepute
- Do not incur expenses or make payments on behalf of the practice without prior approval
- Be prepared to listen and follow instructions, particularly from managers and partners
- Actively participate in staff training and education programs
