Role Overview

We’re seeking a Staff Software Engineer to play a key role in developing and scaling Appodeal’s mediation backend services. You’ll be a senior individual contributor who influences system architecture and technical direction, drives complex feature delivery, and mentors engineers across teams. Your work will directly impact the performance and reliability of systems responsible for ad requests, bidding logic, mediation orchestration, reporting, and developer tools.

As a Staff Developer, you’ll own large subsystems, collaborate with cross-functional partners, and help shape the future of our mediation platform.

What You’ll Do

Technical Leadership

  • Lead architecture and implementation of complex backend features in Ruby and Go
  • Drive critical design decisions with emphasis on performance, scalability, and maintainability
  • Partner with engineering leads, product, and platform teams to define technical roadmaps

System Development & Ownership

  • Design, build, and sustain high-throughput mediation services handling millions of requests
  • Improve and optimize existing services for efficiency, reliability, and observability
  • Tackle mission-critical problems in routing, caching, real-time bidding, and API orchestration

Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Work closely with backend, data, SDK, and devops teams to ship end-to-end solutions
  • Translate product goals into well-structured backend systems
  • Advocate for best practices in testing, code quality, and automation

Mentorship & Influence

  • Mentor mid and senior engineers — support growth through code reviews and design discussions
  • Influence engineering culture, standards, and backend patterns across mediation teams

Required Qualifications

  • 6+ years of backend engineering experience
  • Strong expertise in developing web services and concurrent systems  in production
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems, microservices, and APIs
  • Experience building high-performance, scalable services with low latency
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to drive complex technical initiatives end-to-end
  • Strong communicator — able to align cross-functional teams on architecture and priorities

Nice-to-Have

  • Background in ad tech, ad mediation systems, or real-time bidding platforms
  • Experience with Ruby and Go
  • Ruby/Go performance profiling and optimization experience
