Controls Group plays a critical role in this mission by designing, installing, and maintaining the electrical and computer infrastructure that powers accelerator control systems across the facility.

As an Electrical or Electronics Engineer, you will work closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop and support advanced control systems that enable the remote operation of custom instrumentation used in cutting-edge experiments. Your responsibilities will include designing, testing, and maintaining control system hardware and software components, troubleshooting complex issues, and contributing to system upgrades and optimizations. This role provides a unique opportunity to apply engineering expertise in a high-tech research environment, solving real-world challenges in automation, instrumentation, and distributed control systems.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and professionals across disciplines to design, build, and implement software and hardware solutions crucial for experiment execution, data acquisition, motion control synchronization, and accelerator operation
  • Design, installation, documentation, and maintenance of control system hardware and software
  • Develop software using appropriate programming language (C, C++, JAVA, Perl, Python) for the Controls group projects
  • Use testing & measurement equipment to analyze the performance of control system equipment and provide timely fault diagnosis and resolution
  • Develops control systems and control system components using the EPICS toolkit
  • Develops extended EPICS functionality such as EPICS device support and subroutine records using the C & C++ programming languages
  • Writes scripts to increase productivity, repeatability, and re-use of tests and diagnostics
  • Contributes to and participates in critical review processes as a reviewer, observer, and presenter.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

There are no supervisory responsibilities associated with the position. Expected to provide guidance and assistance to entry-level professionals and technical employees within their job area.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Understands and uses distributed control system concepts
  • Uses Microsoft Office-based productivity tools
  • Experience with stepper motors, pneumatic actuators, and/or precision measurement devices
  • Skilled in computing and network-related activities
  • Works under frequently tight deadlines and manages time by assessing priorities and adjusting schedules and work plans
  • Critical thinking to assess technical proposals, suggest implementation strategies, and develop working designs
  • Fluency in several of the programming languages common in control system use: C, C++, Perl, Python, Java, JavaScript, Assembler
  • Experience using version control tools such as CVS or Git
  • Effective verbal and written communication

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a related program of study from a recognized post-secondary educational institution
  • Four to seven (4-7) years of relevant post-graduate work experience
  • Registered as or qualifies for registration as a Professional Engineer in the province of British Columbia

NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:

The incumbent will be required to complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

COMPENSATION:

Annual salary of $91,545.00 CAD plus our comprehensive employer-paid benefits plan.
