We sat down with our Head of Data – Core Banking (who you'll report to), and they let us know the following about the role:  

What are 5 day to day tasks the person in this role will complete? 

  • Understand data gaps and solutioning requirements to develop and document appropriate data engineering solutions to enable data engineers. 
  • Utilise and uplift data engineering frameworks, tools and techniques (e.g., pipeline automation) to enable the business to gain benefit from our data, faster. 
  • Work collaboratively across teams to ensure that investment in foundational data products is delivering to the needs of the business. 
  • Ensure all engineering frameworks, standards and procedures adhere to BNZ requirements and are high calibre. 
  • Provide guidance and support to peers through code reviews and technical leadership 

 

What is the team culture and environment like? 

The team is made up of experienced data engineers at all levels of experience who regularly share their recent projects, learnings and tips & tricks. 

In the wider group (Digital, Data & Analytics) we foster an open, flexible and inclusive environment that supports collaboration within the immediate team and across the teams in the wider DD&A organisation. 

 

What projects / work will the candidate be working on now and into the next year? 

The successful candidate will be working on both short and long term data projects in the core banking subject area (e.g. Lending, Products and Transactions), working directly with stakeholders to solve problems and deliver data solutions. 

 

What is the most exciting thing about this opportunity? 

Our data engineers have the flexibility to build data solutions that are efficient, fit-for-purpose and scalable. We have standards and frameworks to guide the engineers and are continuing to evolve as we learn from past experiences. We have a buddy system allowing new joiners to learn directly from an existing team member as part of our onboarding process. Individuals are also encouraged to work on their development plan, which may involve teaching or learning a new technical skill from another engineer. 

 

What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity? 

Understanding our data structure and its limitations, so the outputs produced are reliable and fit for purpose.

What attributes will this person display to be successful in this role? 

We are looking for someone with curiosity and a love of data, combined with a passion for designing and building high‑quality data outputs and pipelines, along with: 

  • Solid experience in data engineering roles across ingestion and transformation pipeline development 
  • High proficiency in SQL and preferably Python, with hands‑on experience in modern data engineering practices and tooling (e.g., DBT, orchestrated ELT frameworks, CI/CD) 
  • Strong communication skills, able to translate technical concepts for non‑technical audiences 
  • Capability to mentor others, uplift engineering practices, and embed compliance‑by‑design principles
