What is a Data Protection Technical Lead?
The Data Protection Technologist is a hands-on technical role focused on understanding where customer / employee / users’ data exists, how it moves between systems, who has access to it, and whether the right technical controls are in place.
In simple terms, this role sits between Cyber Security, Legal, Technology, and Privacy, ensuring that data protection is implemented in systems, not just written in policies.
This role reports directly to the Data Protection Officer and works with extended cross-functional teams across Technology, Cyber Security, Product, Digital Platforms, Legal, and Compliance.
What does Data Protection Technical Lead do?
· Key Responsibilities
o Identify where customer and user data exists across systems such as databases, applications, cloud platforms, and integrations.
o Understand and review how data flows between systems (APIs, batch jobs, file transfers, internal integrations).
o Validate technical controls related to:
§ User access and permissions
§ Data movement
§ Data retention and deletion
o Review logs and system outputs to detect unusual or unauthorised access to data.
o Support the procurement, implementation and technical enforcement of consent management systems, ensuring systems respect customer choices.
o Act as the administrator for Privacy Enhancing Technologies(PETs) and related tools.
o Support security and privacy incidents by identifying affected systems and extracting logs or evidence.
o Prepare technical evidence (logs, screenshots, reports) for audits and internal reviews.
o Maintain simple technical documentation such as data flow diagrams and control notes.
o Work under defined requirements with minimal regulator interaction.
· Key Deliverables
o Clear visibility of where customer data exists and how it moves across systems.
o Evidence showing that access controls, logging, retention, deletion, and consent enforcement are working.
o Technical reports and logs supporting audits, investigations, and risk assessments.
o Updated data flow and system documentation.
o Operational ownership of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs).
o Identification and evaluation of suitable Consent Management Platforms (CMPs).
o Coordinating demos and technical reviews of shortlisted consent solutions.
o Supporting procurement and selection of consent management systems.
o Implementing, configuring, and managing the consent management platform after selection.

Requirements
What are we looking for and what does it require to be Data Protection Technical Lead?
· Experience and Educational requirements
o Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Cyber Security, or a related technical field.
o 3–6 years of experience in:
§ Cyber security
§ Cloud infrastructure
§ Data engineering
§ IAM / SOC / security tooling
o Experience in privacy / data protection roles is not required but highly desirable. Strong technical fundamentals matter more.
· Technical Skills Required
o Understanding of databases (SQL / NoSQL), APIs, and system integrations.
o Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
o Familiarity with Privacy management tools (highly advantageous)
o Exposure to DLP, DSPM, or similar privacy tools is a plus.
· Nice to Have (Can Be Learned on the Job)
o Exposure to privacy or consent management tools (e.g., OneTrust, TrustArc, Securiti).
o Understanding of data protection concepts and consent enforcement.
o Experience in regulated or large-scale environments.
· Soft Skills Required
o Detail-oriented and practical problem solver.
o Comfortable working from defined requirements.
o Strong documentation and evidence-building skills.
o Able to work effectively with multiple technical teams.
