GENERAL DESCRIPTION:   Performs complex (journey-level) systems administration work. Work involves maintaining the upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of systems; remediating End-of-Life (EOL) systems, applying critical patches, supporting Active Directory hardening, and maintaining audit readiness.  Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:  

1.     Perform systems administration tasks across both legacy and modern platforms, including configuring computer hardware and software, managing operating systems, and supporting enterprise applications

2.     Monitor, recognize, analyze, and resolve complex technical issues; analyze systems, procedures; and system administration tools.

3.     Plan, test, deploy, and troubleshoot patches and updates across servers and applications.

4.     Ensure compliance with security policies and best practices along with vulnerability scans.

5.     Serve as technical expert resolving problems related to system integration, compatibility, and multiple platform integration.

6.     Coordinate with stakeholders to ensure smooth transitions to newer technologies.

7.     Maintain documentation and CMDB for migration processes, system upgrades, and project future EOL turnover/projects.

8.     Implement, configure, and provide maintenance on various applications such as Java-based applications, Apache, Tomcat, and IIS servers.

9.     Assess and lift EOL systems to new operating systems (RHEL/Windows) and work with customer, quality assurance, networking, and change control to integrate to new server/virtual machines and operating systems.

10.   Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.

11.   Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS: 

Education – Graduation from a standard senior-high school or equivalent is required. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred.

Experience – Minimum of three (3) years’ of experience in an enterprise IT environment performing technical work and supporting applications in both Windows Server and Linux is required. Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the configuration and maintenance of Internet Information Services and Apache/Tomcat is required. Experience with application monitoring solutions (e.g., Application Dynamics, Nagios, Splunk, SolarWinds) and a strong knowledge of patch management tools and best practices is required.

Licensure and/or Certification – If driving is required, must possess a valid driver license from state of residence.

Critical Organizational Infrastructure requirements – This job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure; must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role. Additionally, and more specifically, must not be employed by nor have any connection or continuous connections to any governmental entity or political apparatus of a country listed in 15 C.F.R. §791.4.

Regulatory knowledge – Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.  

Technology – Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint) and be able to learn new software/systems.
•    Operating Systems & Hardware – Demonstrates foundational proficiency with commonly used operating systems, software, and hardware (VMware). Windows Server 2012 to 2025. RHEL server 5/6/7/8/9.
•    Server Administration / Windows/Linux – Hands-on experience with core administrative tasks in either Windows Server or Linux Server environments, including user management, patching, and monitoring.
•    Basic understanding of deploying applications and supporting migrations to modern infrastructure, such as virtualized or cloud-based environments.
•    Knowledge of build processes related to server and application End-of-Life (EOL) upgrades under supervision.

Confidentiality and Protected Information – Must demonstrate an ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations and adhere to applicable laws/statutes/policies related to access, maintenance and dissemination of information.

Safety – Must be able to work in safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.

Schedule and Travel – Availability for after-hours, holidays, overnight, emergencies, and weekend work may be required. This position may have the ability to telecommute based on the needs of the division/agency. Travel in-city and surrounding areas may be required.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.

Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
