Macquarie University is hiring for a proactive and experienced Compliance Officer to join the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) (DVCA) and manage the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the University’s compliance, policy, and quality assurance frameworks. Within this role, you will provide high-level advice to stakeholders and ensure alignment with regulatory and legislative requirements.

The Role

The DVCA Compliance Officer manages the design, implementation and continuous improvement of the University’s policy framework, systems and processes to ensure enterprise-wide compliance with the Quality Assurance Framework, the Higher Education Standards Framework, and other regulatory requirements for the provision of higher education. The role exercises independent judgement in interpreting complex regulatory requirements and determining institutional responses to ensure compliance with national higher education standards and legislative obligations. The position plays a key role in supporting academic governance, managing regulatory risk and representing the University in engagement with external regulatory bodies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the development, implementation and continuous improvement of compliance and quality assurance systems, policy frameworks and administrative processes that support the university-wide Quality and Standards Framework

  • Lead reviews of the portfolio’s policies to ensure alignment with strategic priorities and regulatory requirements, including driving stakeholder engagement and delivering timely reporting to governance committees

  • Provide high-level advice to and collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure compliance with academic regulatory requirements and promote consistent understanding and application across the University

  • Proactively monitor and analyse emerging regulatory requirements and compliance obligations, ensuring the University’s policy frameworks and related procedures align with relevant legislative and regulatory standards (e.g. HESF, ESOS, HESA)

  • Monitor curriculum and other relevant changes to ensure timely submissions to regulatory bodies (e.g. CRICOS updates to TEQSA)

  • Lead the implementation and continuous improvement of administrative systems, processes and governance frameworks for compliance

  • Proactively identify, recommend and implement appropriate actions in response to the changing regulatory environment ensuring that the University’s compliance and quality assurance systems are updated and relevant

  • Support internal processes for reporting compliance and risk, ensuring effective oversight by governance bodies

  • Coordinate and manage compliance, policy and quality audits and reviews, ensuring effective compliance with regulatory and quality standards across the University, risk management, continuous improvement

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders to support compliance, policy awareness and governance objectives

  • Comply with relevant EEO and WHS regulations and perform any other duties relevant and appropriate to the HEW level

About You (Selection Criteria)

  • Postgraduate qualification or extensive experience in compliance, law, business, or a related field

  • Experience developing, reviewing, and implementing institutional policies, interpreting complex legislation and regulatory requirements

  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and influence outcomes in complex organisations, including engagement with senior stakeholders

  • Experience in risk-based compliance environments, aligning policies with institutional risk priorities

  • Proven ability to provide clear, high-quality advice on regulatory matters to staff

  • Experience resolving complex compliance issues, preparing reports, and engaging with governance bodies

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, using data and process analysis to support compliance and continuous improvement

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build and maintain collaborative stakeholder relationships

  • High digital literacy, including Microsoft Office and compliance/governance systems

Desired:

  • Knowledge of governance and regulatory frameworks in higher education

  • Understanding of the Australian tertiary education regulatory environment, including HESF and ESOS
