About this role

Description

MeatEater is looking for a detail-oriented, high-energy Assistant Controller to join our finance leadership team in Bozeman. We are more than just a media company—we are a fast-growing outdoor brand with a complex retail footprint spanning high-volume direct-to-consumer Ecommerce and expanding Wholesale partnerships.

At MeatEater, we live what we do. Our culture is built on a shared passion for the outdoors, conservation, and the hunting and fishing lifestyle. We are looking for a finance professional who values that same sense of adventure and wants to apply their expertise to a brand that is defining the future of outdoor commerce. This role is designed for an experienced accounting leader who possesses the technical rigor required to maintain financial integrity across multiple sales channels and banking relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and implement process improvements to automate data flow between our sales platforms and the ERP system.
  • Lead the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes to ensure timely, GAAP-compliant financial statements.
  • Support the Controller in overseeing treasury management and rolling cash forecasts to ensure operational funding; facilitate banking relationships by preparing complex compliance packages and borrowing base certificates required for the company’s ABL structure.
  • Support the financial statement and audit preparation process, including the drafting of financial statements and disclosures, building "audit-ready" work papers, and managing PBC requests for the Controller’s review.
  • Manage lease accounting functions, ensuring all office, warehouse, and equipment leases are accurately recorded and compliant with ASC 842 standards.
  • Oversee the reconciliation of high-volume transactions from our Ecommerce platforms against payment gateways and bank deposits.
  • Partner with the Controller to research technical accounting and revenue recognition (ASC 606) for multi-channel sales and complex media contracts.
  • Monitor wholesale chargebacks, allowances, and disputes to protect margins and ensure accurate accounts receivable aging.
  • Partner with Operations to review inventory valuation, landed cost analysis, and cycle count programs across our distribution network.
Requirements
  • Experience: 5+ years of accounting experience, including a background that features at least 2 years in public accounting audit.
  • Technical Knowledge: Strong working knowledge of ASC 842 (Leases) and ASC 606 (Revenue Recognition).
  • Certification: CPA
  • Industry Knowledge: Experience in Ecommerce, Wholesale distribution and Media is highly preferred; a personal interest in the outdoors, hunting, or fishing is a significant bonus.
  • Technical Tools: Advanced Excel skills (Power Query, Pivot Tables) and proficiency in mid-market ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, or Sage Intacct).
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
