About this role
Would you like to be part of a team that delivers high-quality software to our customers?
Do you enjoy ensuring the quality of software products delivered?
About our Team
LexisNexis Legal & Professional, which serves customers in more than 150 countries with 11,300 employees worldwide, is part of RELX, a global provider of information-based analytics and decision tools for professional and business customers.
About the Role
The Data Scientist Legal AI (Point of Law & Citation)role conduct experiments on large datasets to evaluate the feasibility, results, and performance of NLP& LLM (Large Language Model). This DS make sound engineering decisions and improve software development practices with an eye for performance and reliability.
You will serve as a project owner for two production-focused agents:
Point of Law (PoL) Agent — PoL summary generation, treatment recognition, PoL linking across cases, and leading-case identification/ranking.
Citation Recognition Agent — citation parsing & normalization (parallel citations, pin cites, star pagination), coreference resolution (e.g., Id./supra/“this case”), and entity linking to canonical legal entities.
You are expected to define the scope and deliver end-to-end projects independently, develop team best practices, and mentor junior staff.
What you’ll do
Scoping & roadmap
Translate product/legal needs into measurable technical milestones, acceptance criteria, and evaluation plans.
Own experiment design, baselines, and ablation plans.
Modeling & methods
PoL: long-document understanding and structured extraction (IRAC/issue–rule–application–conclusion), treatment classification, cross-case PoL linking/cluster building, leading-case ranking (Hit rate/MRR/nDCG).
Citation: robust citation parsing & canonicalization, cross-sentence/coref resolution, entity disambiguation/linking to knowledge bases; build and use retrieval/reranking pipelines.
LLMs: prompt engineering, constrained/structured output (JSON schema/Pydantic), tool use/function calling, fine-tuning or post-training, retrieval-augmented generation.
Data & evaluation
Design annotation guidelines; drive high-quality datasets.
Establish and maintain metrics: span-level Precision/Recall/F1, Hit rate/MRR/nDCG, Has-Leading-Case (HLC), hallucination rate, schema-conformance, latency/throughput SLOs.
Lead error analysis and quality reviews with legal experts.
Engineering & delivery
Productionize models (batch & real-time), build retrieval stores (BM25 + vector), A/B testing, monitoring, and drift detection.
Write clear design docs and reproducible pipelines (data → training → eval → serving).
Standards & mentorship
Set coding/eval standards, review PRs, coach junior colleagues, and scale team practices.
Minimum qualifications
Proven ability to independently scope and deliver complex NLP/IR/LLM projects to production.
Strong hands-on experience in several of: information extraction, long-context modeling, coreference resolution, entity linking, retrieval/reranking, LLM structured output and tool use.
Fluency with Python and ML stack: PyTorch/Transformers, spaCy/regex/rapidfuzz, vector search (Faiss/Milvus), SQL/Parquet, Docker/K8s; basic MLOps (Airflow/Prefect, MLflow/W&B).
Expertise in evaluation design and error analysis; comfortable defending trade-offs with metrics.
Preferred qualifications
Prior work on legal text (case law, citations, rules extraction) or adjacent regulated domains.
Knowledge-graph/on-the-fly linking, document clustering, or weak supervision/programmatic labeling.
Experience leading cross-functional efforts with product, engineering, and domain experts.
Track record of mentoring, setting best practices, and improving team productivity.
Level expectations (company-wide definition)
Senior Data Scientist II: defines the scope of a project and executes independently; develops best practices; leads projects and supports training of junior staff.
