Controller
Comprehensive Prosthetics & Orthotics (CPO)
Reports to: Chief Financial Officer
Location: Chicago, IL or Peoria, IL (Onsite) | Multi-state responsibility
Role Overview
We are seeking a hands-on, operationally-minded Controller to lead the accounting function at CPO as we continue our growth across multiple states. This is an ideal role for an experienced accounting professional (typically 6+ years in) who is ready to step into full ownership of accounting and reporting, and grow into broader leadership responsibilities over time.
You will own the close process, financial reporting, and internal controls. This role offers the opportunity for expanded team leadership as the business executes on its growth plans. You’ll work closely with the CFO, revenue cycle, and operations to ensure financial accuracy, speed, and alignment.
This is a critical, builder role, perfect for someone who thrives in growth-stage environments and wants to leave a lasting operational footprint.
Key Responsibilities
As Controller at CPO, you’ll own the full accounting function end-to-end. You’ll lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process, prepare and review financial statements across multiple entities and states, and ensure the integrity of the balance sheet, including accruals, reserves, intercompany transactions, and fixed assets.
You’ll oversee core accounting operations including General Ledger, AP, AR, payroll accounting and controls, revenue recognition, and cost accounting. This role requires close coordination with HR and third-party providers to ensure timely and accurate payroll processing, and with Revenue Cycle and Operations to maintain alignment across billing, collections, and financial reporting. You’ll also be responsible for maintaining GAAP compliance, supporting audits, managing income tax filings (federal, state, SALT), and serving as a key point of contact for external tax and audit firm personnel, and offshore accounting partners.
In addition to day-to-day accounting operations, you’ll build the infrastructure needed to scale. You’ll lead improvements in accounting systems, develop scalable processes, create accounting playbooks to support acquisitions and expansion, and drive automation to reduce close timelines.
As the company grows, this role is expected to take on broader leadership responsibilities and contribute more strategically to financial operations.

- Effective communicator who can simplify accounting for non-finance stakeholders
- Calm and focused under pressure; thrives in fast-paced, growing environments
- Builder mindset — motivated to create scalable processes and systems
- Desire for full ownership, not just task execution
- Excited to build now and step into team leadership as the role evolves
- Energized by complexity and driven to bring structure and clarity
- Aligned with CPO’s mission to improve lives through healthcare innovation
Compensation & Benefits
