
About this role
The Technical Illustrator lays out and draws illustrations for reproduction in reference works, brochures and technical manuals dealing with assemblies, installation, operation, maintenance, spare parts and the repair of components, tools and equipment.
Responsibilities
- Level 1:
- Assists the Technical Documentation and Publication department with preparing drawings from blueprints, designs, electronic prints and mockups, photo-prints by methods and techniques suited to specified reproduction process for final use such as schematics, perspectives, orthographic, or oblique-angle (3D) views in order to depict function, relationship, and assembly sequence of parts and assemblies such as gears, engines, instruments and other mechanical, hydraulic and electrical assemblies.
- Shades-in or colors drawings to emphasize details or to eliminate undesired backgrounds, using drafting and illustration software, and to paste instructions and comments in position on illustrations.
- Prepares drawings from AutoCAD prints, engineering models, designs, blueprints, mockups, and photo prints.
- Inserts and arrange instructions and comments in position on drawing.
- Creates 3D illustrations from in-house drawings & vendor/supplier drawings.
- Works with vendor/supplier to obtain information needed to create isometric drawing and convey technical information and parts break-down in publications.
- Consults with technical team leads, Engineer Technicians, Service Technicians and other subject matter experts to ensure common understanding of publications and related materials to be produced and to understand and present technical materials and parameters of technical content and the presentation of such content.
- Assists in maintaining cataloging systems, records, files, electronic media and archiving information for publications for business references.
- Assists in preparing material for technical seminars and business forums.
- Assists in maintaining content changes and updates to publications.
- Level 2:
- Perform all the duties of Level 1 plus:
- Collaborates and consults with technical team leads, Engineer Technicians, Service personnel and other subject matter experts to understand and present technical materials and parameters of technical content and the presentation of such content.
- Strong command of drawing standards, dimensioning conventions, and BOM alignment.
- Collaborate with vendors/suppliers to obtain technical information required for isometric drawings and parts breakdowns.
- Shade, color, and enhance drawings using digital illustration tools; insert instructions and comments as required.
- Establish/maintain visual standards, symbol libraries, and reusable components.
- Produce advanced visuals: complex assemblies, multi-step sequences, animations and or interactive figures (where supported).
- Peer-review and provide guidance on best practices.
- Support and oversee internal parts book quality control processes. Review, update, and maintain illustrations that are missing, outdated, or require revision, including coordination with BoM engineers and technical writers.
- Ability to understand scope work, estimate effort, and manage small illustration projects independently.
- Level 3/Senior:
- Perform all the duties of Level 2 plus:
- Communicate, prioritize, and delegate day-to-day illustration tasks, ensuring alignment with technical writer and BOM engineer requirements.
- Consult with engineering technicians, service technicians, technical leads, and subject matter experts to ensure accuracy of technical content.
- Support key visualization activities such as Key Shot images and REMAN illustration efforts.
- Assist with cataloging, archiving, publication content updates, and document control. Prepare material for technical seminars and business forums.
- Collaborates and consults with technical team leads, Engineer Technicians, Service personnel and other subject matter experts to understand and present technical materials and parameters of technical content and the presentation of such content.
- Architect and govern the illustration ecosystem (libraries, templates, line style systems, symbols, and metadata) for scalability and reuse.
- Comfortable with PLM/PDM and change management; understand engineering life cycle and service needs.
- Lead advanced visualization: intricate exploded views, dynamic procedures, 3D PDFs/interactive figures, and motion/animation when applicable.
- Define and enforce style guides; conduct formal quality gates and root-cause analysis on illustration defects.
- Mentor and upskill illustrators, create and maintain training programs.
Competencies
- Level 1:
- Associate’s degree (A.A.S.) in communications, publications, graphics and two years of practical experience or a Technical degree from an accredited institution in a related field with at least four years’ experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Level 2:
- Associate’s degree (A.A.S.) in communications, publications, graphics and four years of practical experience or a Technical degree from an accredited institution in a related field with at least six years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Level 3:
- Bachelor’s degree (B.S.) in communications, publications and graphics and six years or more of experience; or an Associate’s degree (A.S.) in communications, publications, graphics or a Technical degree from an accredited institution in a related field with at least ten or more years’ experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Expected to travel nationally and internationally up to 20% to customer or supplier sites.
- Ability to obtain and maintain mine certifications or safety training such as Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) hazard training.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport.
