JOB TITLE: SML - IT Specialist I – Internship - Information Resources
TEMPORARY POSITION: Internship terms of part-time employment will be up to 6 months (15-30 hours per week).
JOB DESCRIPTION: The Information Resources / Information Technology Intern will support the Department’s Information Resources Division in providing technical support, and IT operations assistance. May assist with cybersecurity monitoring, This internship is designed to offer hands-on experience in help desk support, system administration, and basic cybersecurity practices in a state agency environment. Interns will work under the supervision of the Cybersecurity Analyst and collaborate with IT staff on various projects.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
Assist with help desk support including troubleshooting hardware, software, and network issues.
Support the setup, maintenance, and inventory of IT equipment and user accounts.
Assist in reviewing and updating IT documentation, procedures, and training materials.
Support website updates and ensure accessibility of electronic information resources.
Collaborate with staff on IT projects and provide technical assistance as needed.
Attend training sessions and contribute to IT planning and compliance efforts.
May participate in basic cybersecurity monitoring and incident response activities.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Currently enrolled in a Texas-based college or university.
Major in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
Minimum GPA of 3.0.
Basic knowledge of computer systems, software, and hardware.
Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Windows operating systems
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve basic technical issues.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Completed coursework in networking, cybersecurity, or systems administration
Familiarity with Active Directory, Exchange, or Windows Server environments.
Exposure to cybersecurity tools or concepts (e.g., firewalls, SIEM, endpoint protection).
Experience with scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Python).
Understanding of IT support ticketing systems or help desk operations.
Interest in public service, IT governance, or information security compliance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
·· Basic knowledge of computer systems, software, and hardware support.
Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and information security best practices.
Understanding of Microsoft Office, Windows OS, and basic networking concepts.
Skill in troubleshooting technical issues and providing user support.
Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-technical users.
Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
Willingness to learn new technologies and adapt to evolving IT needs.

This role requires on‑site attendance at our central Austin office. Candidates are encouraged to live within a reasonable commuting distance, ideally no more than 50 miles.
Intern performance is evaluated, and constructive feedback is provided to the intern and their university, if required.
