Position Summary
The individual in this role will perform routine (journey-level) network engineering work to support the State of Texas / DIR Network as well as customer networks through inter-agency agreements. Work involves designing, configuring, troubleshooting, and maintaining the local area and wide area networks, including routers, switches, gateways and application servers. Works under general supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
· Implements and configures routed and switched data networks. Performs configuration of network protocols and services, including OSPF, BGP, EIGRP, and MPLS.
· Monitors system usage and makes recommendations to senior level network engineers. Assist with data network upgrades, implementations, and test plans.
· Consults with client organizations to understand their business and technical needs. Serves as the client’s consultant on data technology related services. Represents DIR at business meetings, customer network meetings, and conferences. Assists with the planning, management and implementation of data services and data networks for clients.
· Assists and participates in projects involving data technology design, data network design, and equipment proof of concept implementations. Ensures work is documented, and that documentation is maintained and kept up to date.
· Analyzes network reports utilizing network tools and utilities; initiates corrective actions.
· Assists in analyzing customer services and support, business processes and operations. Make recommendations for improvements to senior engineers.
· Performs level two technical support and escalation for telecommunications and data issues within the State of Texas. Provides technical support to peers and other State agencies and assists with on-call support.
· Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
· Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in computer science, management information systems, telecommunications, or a related field.
· Additional work-related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis (High-school diploma required).
Experience and Training Required
· One (1) to two (2) years of practical experience with routing and switching design, configuration, and implementation
· One (1) to two (2) years of experience implementing and troubleshooting OSPF and/or BGP.
Experience and Training Preferred
· Industry certification related to routing, switching, security, operating systems, etc. are preferred
· Knowledge with the Cisco IOS-XR platform.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Strong knowledge of the OSI reference model and its role in network implementation and troubleshooting.
· Strong knowledge of IPv4 addressing and subnetting.
· Knowledge of routing protocols.
· Knowledge in data technologies, networking technologies, and standards.
· Knowledge and understanding of wired and wireless LAN technologies.
· Knowledge and understanding of network monitoring tools, e.g., Solarwinds.
· Knowledge and understanding of network ticketing, e.g., Service Now.
· Skills in planning, organizing, tracking, and coordinating projects.
· Skills in configuring and maintaining routers and switches in a production and operational environment.
· Ability to interpret policies and procedures.
· Ability to understand the strategic and operational relationship of the existing infrastructure to the business.
· Ability to effectively manage priorities and demonstrate excellent organizational skills.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective and cordial working relationships at all organizational levels, including agency management, direct supervisors, co-workers, internal and external customers.
· Ability to understand, follow and convey brief oral and/or written instructions.
