This is a newly created role, introduced to strengthen project and offering cost control, financial visibility, and commercial insight within the business. The position is offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract, with the potential for extension or conversion to a permanent role, subject to performance and organizational needs.
The Position
Cost and Project Accountant
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented finance professional who delivers accurate, timely work; proactively identifies and resolves inefficiencies; collaborates effectively across teams; and handles sensitive financial data with integrity and discretion. This role plays a key part in enabling operational excellence and informed commercial decision-making.
Role Purpose
To deliver accurate financial tracking, analysis, and reporting of project and offering costs, ensuring profitability, compliance, and effective cost control across all business units.
The role acts as a critical link between Finance, Operations, and Project Delivery, enabling informed commercial decisions, disciplined cost governance, and optimized margins across projects and service offerings.
Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
• Own the preparation and maintenance of accurate project cost statements, ensuring alignment between budgets, forecasts, and actuals.
• Manage work-in-progress (WIP), revenue recognition, and cost-to-complete calculations in line with accounting standards.
• Track, analyze, and validate direct and indirect project costs, allocations, and recoveries.
• Monitor and explain margin variances across projects, offerings, regions, and service lines.
• Contribute detailed analysis and commentary to monthly management reporting packs.
• Reconcile project financial data across Replicon, Xero, HubSpot CRM, and partner platforms to ensure data integrity and consistency.
• Support month-end close activities related to project and offering cost reporting.
Budgeting & Forecasting
• Support business units in preparing annual budgets and quarterly forecasts.
• Perform scenario and sensitivity analyses to assess project profitability and commercial impact.
• Identify financial trends, risks, and opportunities across projects and offerings to inform decision-making.
Operational & Systems Support
• Ensure consistent and accurate cost coding and classification across all financial systems.
• Collaborate with Project Managers, Operations, and Sales teams to improve pricing accuracy and cost recovery.
• Maintain and update standard cost libraries for recurring offerings and services.
• Maintain appropriate audit trails and support internal and external audit requirements relating to project financials.
• Participate in continuous improvement of project costing processes, controls, and reporting.
Business Partnering
• Provide financial insight and advice on pricing models, discount structures, and margin impacts.
• Work closely with delivery teams to ensure project costs are approved, controlled, and aligned with agreed scope.
• Present clear, actionable financial insights to Finance leadership and Executive Committees on the financial health of projects and offerings.
Accountability & Decision Rights
• Owns the accuracy and completeness of project and offering cost data.
• Acts as the first level of review for project margin variances before escalation.
• Supports the Financial Manager with management accounts and reporting but does not sign off statutory financial statements.
Operational Support & Flexibility
• The role may provide short-term, time-bound operational support to debtors, creditors, or the Financial Manager during peak periods (month-end, quarter-end, audits, or approved leave cover). This support is not intended to replace core transactional roles and will be reviewed to ensure it does not compromise the primary responsibilities of the position.
Governance & Controls
• Ensure compliance with internal financial controls and approval frameworks.
• Maintain audit trails for project cost allocations.
• Participate in continuous improvement of finance governance processes.
Qualifications, Skills & Competencies
Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Management Accounting.(CIMA / SAIPA / SAICA qualification preferred.)
Solid understanding of IFRS, costing principles, and project accounting standards.
Strong working knowledge of Xero, Replicon (or equivalent time/project systems), HubSpot CRM, and Excel (advanced formulas, pivot tables, financial modelling).
Solid understanding of WIP accounting, accruals, and cost allocation methodologies.
Ability to prepare detailed project profitability and contribution analyses.
Exceptional numerical accuracy and strong analytical capability.
Ability to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable operational insight.
Clear, concise written and verbal communication with both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
Preferred Experience
3–7 years relevant accounting experience, ideally in a project-based or service-based environment (IT consulting, professional services, engineering).
Demonstrated experience with project P&L, budgeting, cost modelling, and variance reporting.
Exposure to multi-currency projects or regional cost reporting advantageous.
Availability
Target start date: 01 February 2026
Remuneration
Annual Base Salary: R350,000 – R600,000, depending on experience and qualification.
