Job Description
As a Sustainable Design Leader at Hassell, you’ll work inside live projects, influence client decisions, and help shape how a global design practice delivers sustainability and regenerative outcomes.
The role is deliberately balanced:
- 70% project-facing — embedded in project teams and client conversations
- 30% practice-wide — shaping frameworks, capability and influence across the business
You’ll work closely with our Head of Sustainability, Heads of Design and studio leaders to deliver impact now, while helping evolve the way Hassell operates globally.
Where you’ll add the most value
We’re looking for a strong sustainability generalist with depth in one (or both) of the following:
Social Value — equity, inclusion, community benefit, stakeholder outcomes, SROI, social procurement
Resilience & Adaptation — climate risk, future climate conditions, systems resilience and long-term performance
What you’ll do
On projects
Embed sustainability and regenerative thinking from early strategy through delivery
Shape project direction, not just performance targets
Lead social value or resilience thinking on complex briefs
Translate technical sustainability into clear, value-led design narratives
Influence clients, consultants and stakeholders toward higher ambition
Across the practice
Help evolve Hassell’s sustainability framework and regenerative design approach
Contribute to tools, learning and communities of practice
Support external positioning, thought leadership and advocacy
Share lessons from projects to lift capability across studios
Qualifications
About you
You’re a senior practitioner who moves easily between detail and strategy.
You influence through trust, clarity and collaboration — not authority.
You bring:
Strong built environment experience with a portfolio of real impact
Proven leadership in sustainability and regenerative design
Depth in social value and/or resilience, plus broad sustainability capability
The ability to turn complexity into clear, compelling project strategies
Confidence working with senior clients and design leaders
