Job Description
Yale is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Lead Backend Software Engineer to join our dynamic team in San Francisco, United States. In this pivotal role, you will spearhead the design, development, and maintenance of scalable backend systems that power our cutting-edge applications.
- Lead the architecture and development of robust, scalable backend solutions using modern technologies and best practices
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical specifications
- Design and implement high-performance APIs and service layers that integrate data from various internal and external sources
- Optimize system performance and troubleshoot complex issues across the entire backend stack
- Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation
- Conduct thorough code reviews and maintain high coding standards across the team
- Proactively identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure optimal system performance
- Drive the adoption of modern development practices, including automated testing, CI/CD, and observability tools
- Participate in and lead Agile development processes, including sprint planning and retrospectives
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies and industry trends, continuously improving team tools and practices
Qualifications
- 10+ years of professional backend development experience with a strong portfolio of scalable web applications
- Proven track record in leading end-to-end development of production systems
- Deep expertise in one or more backend programming languages
- Extensive experience with system integration, API design, and distributed data systems
- Strong understanding of software architecture patterns (microservices, serverless, event-driven)
- Advanced skills in data modeling, performance tuning, and troubleshooting complex system issues
- Excellent project management abilities, including scope management and timeline estimation
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills with the ability to guide and develop team members
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities and analytical thinking
- Effective communication skills to articulate technical decisions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and writing comprehensive unit/integration tests
- Proficiency in Node.js, MongoDB, RabbitMQ, Redis, Kubernetes, and HashiCorp Vault
- Experience designing and operating cloud-native applications (AWS/GCP/Azure)
- Background in CI/CD and DevOps culture
- Knowledge of security compliance and secure coding practices
- Familiarity with AI/ML concepts and their application in backend systems
- Experience working with IoT device fleets
Additional Information
Fortune Brands believes in fair and equitable pay. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role is Hiring Pay Range: $130,000 USD - $214,500 USD. Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range, or be above or below the range, based on factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, professional achievement, business need, and location. In addition to base salary, employees will participate in either an annual bonus plan based on company and individual performance, or a role-based sales incentive plan.
