Purpose

The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is a global leader in training and outreach for journalists, with more than 20 years of experience helping strengthen journalism and press freedom around the world, and in Latin America and the Caribbean particularly.

Housed in the Moody College of Communication at UT Austin, the Knight Center offers free and low-cost multilingual courses, webinars, and resources through its three main programs: Journalism Courses, the International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), and the trilingual digital magazine LatAm Journalism Review (LJR). The Center works with media organizations globally to expand access to training, foster innovation, and support journalism worldwide.

The Marketing and Communications Coordinator will support the Knight Center by helping to showcase the Center’s programs and create and execute strategies to expand its global reach. This person will contribute to the success of the Center by ensuring that its programming reaches as many people as possible.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Work with Knight Center leadership to develop, maintain, and execute a marketing and communications strategy for the Center and its main programs. Keep the strategy up-to-date and adapt it as needed.
Write, edit, and distribute promotional stories and press releases about the Knight Center’s courses, events, publications, and more, for publication in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
Create and execute campaigns to promote the Knight Center’s programs (and related offerings) on social media, ensuring that the Center’s presence in multiple platforms is relevant and engaging. Grow the Center’s presence on social media and establish and track related goals and benchmarks for success.
Produce and/or coordinate the production of social media creatives for free and paid promotion on multiple platforms to promote Knight Center’s programs, track incoming traffic, and develop related best practices.
Oversee the Center’s database by using it to send email marketing materials and engage audiences, while also developing new ways of using it as effectively as possible.
Deepen engagement with existing audiences, and find creative ways to cultivate new audiences, in service of growing the Center’s international reach.
Maintain and update the Knight Center’s institutional website and, in collaboration with staff, help to maintain the Center’s programmatic websites.
Create and edit videos that showcase the Knight Center’s programs and upcoming offerings.
Attend occasional conferences and other events on behalf of the Knight Center, with the goal of helping to market the Center’s programs.
Oversee the work of marketing & communication interns and provide related guidance and feedback.
Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field related to the work to be performed. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Previous marketing and communication experience, conducted in a professional setting.
Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to copy edit marketing and communication content for grammatical errors, typos etc.
Demonstrated ability to use a full range of multimedia storytelling methods, i.e. written copy, videos, graphics, etc.
Deep understanding of, and practical experience with, social media platforms.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to manage concurrent projects while proactively communicating with stakeholders.
Strong interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills.
Ability to maintain punctual, dependable hours on a regular basis.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Fluent or conversant in Spanish and/or Portuguese.
Familiarity with WordPress and email management systems.
Familiarity with tracking website analytics.
An understanding of, and appreciation for, the journalism industry.
Experience maintaining brand and style standards and guidelines.
Video editing experience.
Familiarity with AP style.

Work Shift

Monday through Friday (8 Hours/Day) is typical. However, there may be the opportunity for future remote work. There may also be times when the work schedule will extend beyond standard office hours based on specific business needs, including occasional weeknights and weekends.

Salary Range

$51,000

Working Conditions

May work around standard office as well as studio audio equipment. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Frequent standing and sitting and the use of manual dexterity. Lift and move standard office files and supplies. Various conditions for reporting in the field. Work hours may include occasional evenings, weekends and some holidays during peak periods to meet deadlines. Final candidate will be required to pass a background check prior to starting employment.
