Diagnose issues and repairs of: HVAC, Starting and Charging systems, Brakes, Engine Cooling, Exhaust, Fuel System, Suspension including alignments, Steering, After treatment (DEF and DPF) systems, Air systems and Electrical systems.
Work well with a team to provide excellent customer service and promote a positive work environment
Possess tools to properly perform repairs within our scope of service
Desire to learn and grow professionally
Have reliable transportation to and from work and valid driver’s license.

The Diesel Mechanic will be working on a variety of company owned heavy trucks and trailers ranging from OTR sleepers to Live Bottom Trailers, including troubleshooting and repair: electronic, fuel, ignition, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems. While the mechanic will be working mostly independently, all mechanics are expected to be able to work within a team environment to accomplish major projects efficiently and effectively.

In this Diesel Mechanic role, you will:

Perform your work within our Standard Labor Repair Times (SRTs).
Respond to service calls for emergency breakdowns.
Safety checks on vehicles – the safety of every single employee and the people in our communities is our number one priority
Complete required paperwork, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
Assisting senior Mechanics in the completion of project work.
Reviews, completes, or assigns repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with Corporate / OSHA Standards and perform all work in accordance with established safety procedures.

Principal Responsibilities:

Maintains a working knowledge of, and moderate skill proficiency in, the following vehicle components and systems, with the ability to perform preventative and repair maintenance functions, both on-site and on the road.
Chassis component repair and maintenance.
Refuse bodies, including control, hydraulic and electrical systems; and air and hydraulic braking systems.
Engine repair and maintenance.
Suspension, drivetrain and steering systems.
Heating and air conditioning.
Performs line maintenance welding and fabrication.
Safely provides road service when necessary to ensure that the Company’s equipment is returned to operation in a safe and efficient manner.

Qualifications:

Basic understanding of work order labor time standards.
Prior experience with, or knowledge of, maintenance work to be performed on Classes 1-5 light/medium duty and heavy-duty Class 7-8 trucks, aircraft, or ships.
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications (T1-T8) are a plus but not required.

Minimum of 1 year of experience in a technician position demonstrating knowledge of both gasoline and diesel powered equipment diagnosis and repair or will be graduating from an accredited automotive college or technical school within the next 3 months.

A Day In The Life: What You'Ll Be Doing

As a Diesel Technician, you'll be a key part of our Fleet Maintenance team, ensuring our Class 8 fleet is safe and reliable. Our fleet is primarily day cabs and trailers, all under manufacturer warranty—meaning no major engine overhauls or roadside calls.

You'll perform a variety of tasks, with clear pathways for growth:

Routine Maintenance & Repair: Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and component replacements on our fleet.
Collaborate & Optimize: Work with your team to maintain accurate records, optimize vehicle performance, and minimize downtime.
Safety First: Adhere to all safety protocols and industry best practices to ensure our fleet is always DOT compliant.

What We'Re Looking For

We're searching for skilled professionals with a strong background in diesel technology.

Experience: 6+ months of experience with Heavy-Duty Class 8 trucks and trailers or similar equipment (e.g., agricultural, construction, waste collection truck) preferred.
Technical Skills:

Experience performing preventative maintenance, changing wheels and tires, and general inspections.

Certifications & Training:

A minimum of two ASE Certifications within the first 6 months of employment (we'll reimburse you!).
T-series ASE Certifications are highly valued.

Requirements:

A valid Driver's License with a clean driving record
Ability to perform physical tasks associated with vehicle maintenance (lifting, bending, etc.).
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality workmanship.
A solid attendance record and punctuality are essential for this role.

Qualifications:

• Journey level mechanic with at least 4 years related experience preferred.

• AA certificate from college or vocational/technical school in Diesel Technology is preferred.

Qualifications

Marine Diesel and/or Volvo VODIA experience required
High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or certification in diesel mechanics or a related field preferred.
Proven experience as a diesel mechanic, with demonstrated proficiency in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel engines and related systems.
Strong mechanical aptitude and technical skills, with the ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and schematics.
Familiarity with diagnostic tools and equipment used in diesel engine repair, such as scan tools, multimeters, and oscilloscopes.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues.
Effective communication skills and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Willingness to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with changing priorities and deadlines.
Currently holding or has the ability to hold an Australian Government Security Clearance – NV1 or above.

Responsibilities:

Repairs include but are not limited to, routine maintenance and repairing engines chassis and body components, hydraulic cylinders, brake systems, suspension systems, cooling systems, wheels and tires.
Inspects equipment and/or trucks for condition, operations, parts and fluid levels, differentials, final drives, pump drives, and hubs.
Knowledge of Hydraulics repair is required
Utilizes vehicle computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes to initiate or assign repairs.
Conducts safety checks on vehicles and equipment.
Completes required paperwork utilizing fleet maintenance software program associated with repairing vehicles, documenting parts usage, and accounting for repair times.
Reviews, completes or assigns repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
Performs maintenance related work as required.
Maintains a clean, safe work area in compliance with corporate and OSHA standards.
Performs required safety protocols while working on vehicles.
Ability to effectively communicate needed repairs or tasks.

Strong background in heavy diesel mechanics, including hydraulic and pneumatic systems
Ability to conduct routine and preventative maintenance to ensure equipment reliability
Proficiency in fault-finding and repairs on engines, transmissions, brakes, and suspension systems
Knowledge of compliance standards, roadworthy requirements, and heavy vehicle inspections
Welding and fabrication skills (advantageous for on-site repairs)
Ability to work across a variety of equipment in both workshop and field environments

Education, Training, Experience and Licensing/Certification Requirements:

Knowledge of DOT, OSHA and other related state and federal regulations.
Must have a Brake safety certificate and 609 A/C system certification.
ASE Certifications preferred.
Ability to understand and interpret detailed schematics and manuals.
Communicate effectively across various levels of the organization and communicate with customers and external vendors.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions and procedural manuals.
Experience using diagnostic software. Must be computer literate and willing and able to be trained in software systems.
Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred, or the willingness and ability to obtain one within six (6) months of employment.
5+ years of diesel/CNG maintenance experience.

Physical/Mental Demands:

Ability to stand, sit, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance.
Continuous concentrated mental and visual attention required.
Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Ability to operate trucks and other equipment used as needed.
Ability to use a computer and related devices, such as a keyboard or mouse or other related equipment, throughout the workday while seated at a desk or workstation.

Job Responsibilities:

At First Student, you’ll schedule and perform school bus fleet maintenance on Type C and Mini Vans, diagnose and troubleshoot complex problems, and maintain service records. Other job duties will include:

Supervise technicians in the shop.
Generate work orders and track progress through completion.

Diesel Mechanic Responsibilities:· Performs vehicle inspections, troubleshooting and testing to determine required or recommended repairs · Accurately diagnose malfunctions and perform the necessary repairs for them including but not limited to repairing engine failures; repairing mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions; replacing parts and components as required · Examines assigned vehicle to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended · Verifies vehicle serviceability and ensure quality repairs the first time by conducting test drives; adjusting controls and systems as required · Ensures that customer vehicles kept clean during repair process · Contains costs by using warranty; evaluating service and parts options for repairs as required · Communicates with service advisor and/or dispatcher if additional work is needed · Aids service writer as needed to write work orders, conduct test rides, interact with the customer, or in any other way necessary to guarantee customer satisfaction · Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt of parts and supplies · Maintain a clean, efficient work area and assist in keeping the shop neat and organized · Documents all work performed and recommended on the repair order in accordance with standard operating procedures · Understands the terminology of the automobile business and keep abreast of technology changes in the product · Follows all attendance and punctuality standards with adherences to timekeeping standards; Employees are required to record the beginning and ending times of any shift, break or departure from work for personal reasons · Follows the Code of Business Ethics and Conduct · Understands and follows all work rules and follows directions from Supervisors · Upholds the company’s non-disclosure and confidentiality policies · Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with company policy · Attends pertinent training on request · Attends company meetings as required Diesel Mechanic Requirements:· High school diploma or the equivalent and two-year related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. · Associate's degree (A.
