Our B&A Studios team has an exciting opportunity for a Junior Urban Planner to join them in the downtown Calgary office. The Junior Urban Planner is responsible for supporting the creation of plans and policies that guide the development, zoning, and management of land in cities and regions. This role focuses on developing your career as a planner and offers many opportunities for professional growth through hands-on planning experience. Working collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team, the Urban Planner contributes to high-quality, innovative, and practical planning solutions that serve a wide range of clients and project types.
Responsibilities:
- Manages urban planning projects under the supervision of a Senior Planner, Associate, or Partner.
- Conducts research on urban development trends, demographics, and land use.
- Develops land use plans, zoning regulations, and policies.
- Writes proposals and prepares reports with oversight from a Senior Planner, Lead, or Director.
- Creates plans that address housing, transportation, infrastructure, and environmental concerns in partnership with other teams and disciplines.
- Collects and analyzes data on economic, social, and physical factors affecting land use, projects future community needs, and prepares narrative reports.
- Acts as a project team liaison and monitors project performance (deadlines, budget, deliverables).
- Identifies and recommends business development opportunities.
- Applies knowledge of municipal governance structures, planning legislation, standards, and practices.
- Demonstrates strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Works on diverse projects across several different service areas.
- May support our ongoing planning initiatives in the energy and linear infrastructure space.
- Cross-collaborate in a team environment.
Qualifications
- Minimum 2 years of experience as an urban/community planning professional.
- Accredited undergraduate degree in Urban Planning or a related field.
- Membership or candidate membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP); RPP designation (or eligibility) is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of urban planning theories, zoning laws, municipal governance, and land development processes.
- Familiarity with MS Office 365, GIS, and database systems is considered an asset.
- Strong research, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating in an interdisciplinary team environment.
