Based in the Sherwood Park location, the Systems Administrator maintains a reliable, secure, and efficient data communications network spanning First Canadian, its disaster recovery site, and seven additional Wheaton Group companies. This role oversees the organization’s IT infrastructure, including servers, user accounts, security controls, and business-critical applications. The Systems Administrator ensures system stability, addresses technical issues, implements updates and patches, and supports IT initiatives that enhance performance, security, and scalability. They also provide technical guidance to users and collaborate with other IT teams to ensure smooth and secure daily operations.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Manage and maintain server infrastructure across First Canadian and all Wheaton Group companies, including O365 environment, application servers, and supporting systems.
  • Administer Azure environments, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and cloud-based services to ensure availability, security, and scalability.
  • Enhance operational efficiency through automation scripting and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC).
  • Install, configure, and upgrade client and server software, operating systems, and network applications.
  • Monitor and maintain server operations, including performance, connectivity, and security controls.
  • Support IT projects and system initiatives, delivering outcomes aligned with organizational goals.
  • Provide Tier 3 technical support for staff, administrators, vendors, and service providers—including helpdesk escalations, printer management, domain services, and networking support.
  • Administer systems and services such as Active Directory, O365 environment, and other enterprise tools.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues involving server hardware, software, and systems infrastructure.
  • Assist in developing, deploying, and maintaining workstation and VDI images for staff.
  • Assist with secure hardware lifecycle management, including data sanitization, recycling, and asset retirement.
  • Manage Cohesity backups, restores, and disaster recovery processes to ensure data protection and continuity.
  • Provide remote support for staff working off-site or abroad using enterprise remote-access tools.
  • Deploy and configure hardware and software components for servers, and related equipment.
  • Communicate progress on initiatives and elevate risks or issues to the IT Manager as needed.
  • Prioritize and manage workload based on urgency, impact, and business requirements.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, managers, and stakeholders across the organization.
  • Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for new and existing technical processes.
  • Support remote and hybrid workforce needs as required.
  • On-Call rotational support as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field is required; equivalents or experience will be considered.
  • 3–5+ years of experience in a Systems Administrator or similar infrastructure-focused role.
  • Experience supporting multi-site or enterprise environments is an asset.
  • Strong proficiency with Windows Server administration, including Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and file/print services.
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online, identity management, and security configuration.
  • Solid understanding of Azure, including virtual machines, Azure AD, and VDI/AVD or similar virtual desktop environments.
  • Experience managing server virtualization (VMware, Hyper-V, or equivalent).
  • Knowledge of backup and disaster recovery technologies—Cohesity experience is a strong asset.
  • Skilled in automation and scripting (PowerShell preferred).
  • Familiarity with hardware lifecycle management, secure data destruction, and asset management best practices.
  • Experience with enterprise tools such as remote support platforms, monitoring systems, and endpoint management tools.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104 min, AZ-305 preferred)
  • Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator or related is preferred.
  • VMware or Hyper-V related certifications are preferred.
  • ITIL Foundations certification is preferred.
  • Fluent in English with proven skills in verbal and written communication is required.
  • Fluent in French with proven competencies in verbal and written communication is an asset.
  • Provide occasional after-hours support to maintain business continuity and address critical system issues when necessary.
  • Successful completion of employment, criminal, and education background checks including employer reference and verification before employment is required.
