Your responsibilities
Working with an Owner/Consultant team, the Hydraulic Turbine-Generator Mechanical Engineer reports to and receives direction from the Lead Engineer for the assigned project(s) as required within the Major Projects Department. To make a significant contribution to the department’s initiatives and goals, the ideal candidate is an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with a robust learning ability, possesses strong oral and written communication skills, is an effective team member, and possesses good leadership abilities.
While this is a mechanical engineering role, the ideal candidate will also have a strong understanding of electro-magnetic, electrical and control systems as related to hydraulic turbine-generating equipment and will have the experience and education to perform the duties and job functions associated with this position with respect to the engineering, manufacture and installation of large hydraulic turbine-generation systems which include but are not limited to the following
- Preparing technical specifications and engineering reports;
- Evaluating and providing recommendations for the application of new technologies and products;
- Consulting with Operations and other stakeholders to maximise alignment of new and refurbished generating equipment and systems with stakeholder needs;
- Researching and analysing historical documentation and operating data as required to inform design;
- Preparing technical procurement documentation for procurement of design, supply and construction of goods and services;
- Conducting technical review and recommendation of bids;
- Participating in design reviews, constructability workshops, safety-by-design workshops, risk reviews, and project meetings;
- Reviewing of consultant and manufacturer design calculations, assumptions, drawings and specifications to ensure that appropriate safety, industry and NL Hydro standards, norms, and practices are met;
- Responding to technical and/or site queries, including troubleshooting and investigations, as required;
- Providing relevant input into project estimates and schedules;
- Providing on-site technical and construction support to both internal and contractor personnel;
- Performing quality assurance and control oversight activities through design, manufacture, construction, testing and commissioning phases;
- Proactively supporting a safety culture where "Nobody Gets Hurt;
- Ensuring quality and suitability of as-built document deliverables, operation and maintenance manuals and other completions documentation.
Qualifications
Your profile
- Mechanical Engineering Degree, registered with the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador (PEGNL) association;
- Bachelor of Engineering Degree (Mechanical) from a recognized university;
- Eligible for membership in the Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland and Labrador Association;
- Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience, with several years in project execution;
- Experience with design, production, installation, operation and/or maintenance of large rotating power generating equipment;
- Experience with a Turbine-Generator OEM and/or an electric utility would be considered an asset.
