The purpose of this class within the organization is to work on a crew performing general labor duties and maintenance for a department. This class works under close supervision according to set procedures.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent. Requires six months in general labor work or closely related experience. The equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and current DOT Medical Card required.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of the types and uses of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in general maintenance, construction, and repair.
- Advanced knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around mechanized construction and maintenance equipment.
- Willingness and ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within six months of employment.
- Ability to understand and carry out specific oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform manual tasks involving physical strength and endurance under variable weather conditions.
- Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergency situations or tight deadlines.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
- Work is performed onsite. The incumbent must be present at work to perform the essential functions of this job.
Essential Job Functions:
- Completes daily assignments from supervisor; performs various work depending on the assigned crew.
- Operates heavy equipment on city streets and highways.
- Works as a member of a street maintenance crew doing such jobs as, pouring and finishing concrete, breaking pavement, pouring and shoveling asphalt, raking, temping, and smoothing asphalt.
- Assists with training and mentoring of other crew members as needed.
- Digs out holes with manual and automatic digging tools; fills depressions with slag, gravel, or other materials; acts as a road crew worker on construction or repair projects.
- Operates trucks, air compressors, pumps, and related light public works equipment as a necessary part of normal duties; does concrete work; assists in installing signs, markers, benches, etc.
- Inspects machinery and equipment daily to ensure proper condition for the completion of daily responsibilities; performs minor repairs and maintenance, including washing, greasing, fueling, etc.; ensures bolts, hoses and pins are properly secured.
- Performs vehicle inspections prior to beginning a route and again after a route is completed.
- Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the crew leader, other City personnel, co-workers, and the general public.
- Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
