Job Description Summary

Job Summary:
The Robotics and Automation Industrial Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and optimising automated systems and processes for GE Vernova’s power electronics products that are used in its global HVDC projects. As a visible member of the manufacturing team, you will be seen as the expert for robotic/automation technologies. Always working to SQDC (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost) framework your inputs will help drive annual production improvements.
This role will collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality through the application of advanced robotics, automation technologies, and the latest trends in component assembly, quality inspection, and material handling. You will build strong business cases, manage end-to-end project execution, and to ensure timely delivery of robotic/automation solutions.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in robotic systems, collaborative robots (cobots), PLC programming, and control systems integration.
The role is a pivotal position in a fast-paced environment that requires both technical expertise, a desire to get the job done, and clear communication while maintaining strong working relationships with all stake holders (Production, Maintenance, Quality, Procurement and Engineering/NPI).

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Ensure all automated systems comply with safety standards and regulations both internal and external (e.g., HSE, ISO).
    • Develop and implement safety protocols for the operation of automated systems.
  • System Design and Development:
    • Design and develop automated systems for assembly, inspection, material handling and automated testing equipment.
    • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to integrate automation into production lines.
  • Project Management:
    • Lead automation projects from conception through implementation.
    • Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure successful completion.
  • Programming and Testing:
    • Program robotic systems using languages such as Python, C++, or specific robot programming languages (e.g., FANUC, ABB).
    • Conduct thorough testing and validation of automated systems to ensure they meet performance standards.
  • Maintenance and Troubleshooting:
    • Provide ongoing maintenance and support for automated systems.
    • Diagnose and resolve issues related to automation malfunctions or process inefficiencies.
  • Training and Documentation:
    • Train production staff on the operation and maintenance of automated systems.
    • Create and maintain detailed documentation for automated systems, including user manuals and maintenance logs.

Qualifications:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related field.
    • Desirable: Master’s degree
  • Experience:
    • Significant experience in robotics and automation within Automotive, Electronics, Aviation, Heavy Machinery or a similar manufacturing setting.
    • Proven experience with robotic systems such as FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Universal Robots, Doosan or similar.
    • Experience in programming and troubleshooting PLCs.
    • Experience with major PLC brands (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi, Rockwell Automation).
    • Experience with collaborative robots (cobots).
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in robotic programming languages and software (e.g., RobotStudio, WorkVisual).
    • Experience with machine vision systems, AOI, and other quality inspection technologies.
    • Real-time defect detection and quality assurance.
    • Knowledge of material handling technologies such as AGVs, AMRs, and smart conveyors.
    • Proficiency in PLC programming and troubleshooting.
    • Experience with HMI systems and SCADA software.
    • Proficiency in 2D/3D CAD software (e.g. AutoCAD, CREO) and manufacturing simulation tools.
    • Experience of data capture integration in manufacturing environments with IT networks and digital systems.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Project management skills with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Certifications:
    • Certification in robotics or automation (e.g. RFCP, ISA CAP, ROS, Association of Advanced Automation)
    • PLC programming certifications (e.g. Siemens Certified Professional, Rockwell Automation Certification)
    • Certifications in lean manufacturing or continuous improvement methodologies (e.g. Six Sigma Green Belt)
    • Project management certification (e.g. PMP, PMI-ACP)

Work Environment:

  • May involve working non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, to support project deadlines and production output.
  • The role involves both office-based work and hands-on activities on the production floor.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, including standing or walking for extended periods.
  • Overtime/weekend working may be necessary to support production
  • This position may require standing for extended periods and will involve exposure to the production floor.
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) will be required depending on the work setting.
  • Attending meetings and reporting as necessary to support the business.
  • May require lifting and carrying materials and equipment.
  • Occasional travel might be necessary to support actions.
