The Lifecycle Marketing Specialist will play a pivotal role in the strategy and execution of member-facing messaging strategy. Using outbound systems, harnessing automation tools, and insightful analytics, the role will operationalize campaigns that support McClatchy’s evolving membership model, including lifecycle marketing, communications tied to member benefits, events, and engagement initiatives. The underlying goal is to deepen member connection and underscore how their support drives the impact of strong, community-focused local news.

The day-to-day responsibilities of this role include planning, building, and optimizing multi-channel campaigns and journeys, effectively segmenting audiences, and translating performance data into actionable insights that strengthen our broader marketing and communications strategy. This role will orchestrate end-to-end lifecycle communications that guide members throughout their journey and reinforce the value of their membership. Success will be measured by increases in engagement, conversions, and overall customer lifetime value (CLTV).

The anticipated base pay range for this position is between 80k and 85k annually. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography, and local wage and hours laws.

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Director, Lifecycle Marketing, to implement a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy to support each market’s core print and digital news products and memberships across engagement and retention efforts. 
  • Drive innovation in member-facing communications and engagement strategies, using data and creativity to develop messaging and modern omni-channel marketing practices that resonate across markets. 
  • Support the growth of membership-related communications needs, including needs for membership events, loyalty programs, incentives, and rewards programs.
  • Daily execution of marketing campaigns & journeys, including set up, upkeep and ongoing optimization of email marketing (copywriting, coding and designing); creating/segmenting lists; scheduling, setting up A/B tests, QA, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with other areas of Marketing, News, Audience Development, Customer Service, Data, and Technology teams to ensure cross-functional alignment and collaboration when building lifecycle marketing strategies. 
  • Devise and execute A/B tests, create and manage testing/optimization roadmaps, record results, and advise on improvements. 
  • Implement defined business requirements for marketing automation campaigns/journeys.
  • Work with audience segmentation and review communications calendar to ensure audiences are not messaged above the limits set by business standards across the organization.
  • Maintain the performance and health of marketing channels with regard to audience segmentation, personalization, list hygiene, and deliverability.
  • Monitor industry best practices. Integrate best practices to ensure optimal email results, improved deliverability, accessibility, and compliance around permission-based marketing, privacy, and spam regulation (CAN/SPAM/CCPA).

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Strong hands-on experience with Braze and event-based automation workflows.
  • Proficiency in Liquid Logic and sufficient HTML/CSS knowledge for email and messaging template adjustments.
  • Understanding of CRM best practices, behavioral triggers, consumer attributes and how they influence decision paths within the customer journey
  • Experience with A/B and multivariate testing methodologies.
  • Familiarity with Amplitude or similar analytics platforms for campaign performance tracking.
  • Excellent organizational and troubleshooting skills; detail-oriented with a passion for systems efficiency.
  • Avid team player; proven ability to apply innovative ideas and critical thinking to projects and the organization's opportunities, and able to work with various teams: creative, IT, analytics, etc.
  • Able to anticipate needs, innovate and flourish in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
  • Proficient with G-Suite and Slack.  

NICE TO HAVE

  • Hands-on experience of event-based data models (APIs, webhooks) using Python/Javascript and how it relates to marketing automation.
  • Hands-on experience utilizing SQL to operationalize customer data models and segmentation including extracting, analyzing, and interpreting data from warehouses and CDPs such as Amplitude.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • BA or BS Degree from a four-year college or university or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred 
  • 2-5 years in a similar lifecycle marketing/CRM/marketing operations role, including experience with channels such as email, in-app messaging, in-browser messaging, push, content cards, SMS;
  • Deep understanding of major messaging platforms, analytics tools (Tableau or Amplitude preferred) and lifecycle marketing.
