Position Summary

Maintain, repair, and install plumbing equipment in the hospital buildings. 

This position is responsible for performing plumbing, heating, and cooling system tasks, including installation, repair, and preventive maintenance of various systems such as drainage, water, and fire protection systems. Duties include service work order completion, maintaining a safe and organized work environment, and ensuring compliance with safety and occupational policies. The role requires flexibility for on-call and off-shift scheduling and emphasizes teamwork and maintaining positive relations with crew members and other departments. Additional responsibilities may be assigned as needed.

Minimum Requirementseducation:

  1. High school graduate or equivalent required.
  2. Graduate from a vocational-technical school required. 
  3. Within one (1) year of hire /transfer, successfully completes The American Society of Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), NFPA-99, “Healthcare Facilities Code”, Certificate of Attendance. This will be tracked and maintained by the Facilities department.
  4. Annually achieves Continued Education Credits (CECs) until (ASHE), NFPA-101-2012, “Life Safety Code”, Certificate of Attendance is completed. This will be tracked and maintained by the Facilities department.

Experience:

  1. Minimum of (5) years of experience working as a plumber required. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  1. In-depth understanding of plumbing systems, including pipes, fittings, valves, and water heaters, and how they work together in both residential and commercial buildings.
  2. Familiarity with local, state, and federal plumbing codes, safety regulations, and best practices to ensure installations and repairs comply with legal standards.
  3. Knowledge of how to read and interpret blueprints, plumbing diagrams, and technical manuals to understand the layout and plumbing systems in a building.
  4. Understanding of various plumbing materials (copper, PVC, PEX, cast iron, etc.) and tools (wrenches, pipe cutters, soldering equipment) used in installations and repairs.
  5. Understanding the principles of water flow, pressure, and drainage systems to ensure proper installation and function.
  6. Ability to diagnose plumbing issues and identify effective solutions, including leak detection, pipe blockages, and fixture malfunctions.
  7. Skill in using hand and power tools specific to plumbing tasks, such as pipe cutters, soldering irons, pressure testers, and drain cleaning machines.
  8. Ability to make precise measurements, cut, and assemble pipes, ensuring correct fittings and alignments to avoid future issues.
  9. Strong communication skills to explain plumbing issues and solutions clearly to customers, providing professional advice and estimates.
  10.  Ability to handle tools and work in tight or awkward spaces while maintaining safety and efficiency.

License/Certification/Registration:

  1. Valid driver license required.

Essential Functions

  1. Carries out duties related to plumbing, heating, and cooling piping systems.
  2. Responsible for the completion of all service work order assignments in a timely fashion.
  3. Maintains shop area in safe and orderly appearance. 
  4. Installs sanitary drainage, storm water, and potable water systems. 
  5. Repairs toilets, sinks, and other plumbing fixtures. 
  6. Performs preventive maintenance and periodic testing of fire protection systems such as fire pumps, dry pipe systems, chemical suppression systems, fire hydrants, post indicator valves, backflow preventers, etc. 
  7. Available for on call. Could be scheduled for off shifts and rotation as needed. 
  8. Complies with established occupational exposure policies. 
  9. Maintains good relations with other members of the crew, other crews, and all other departments so that work is performed in a harmonious manner. 
  10. Complies with all safety codes whether Federal, State, or local; maintains a safe work environment. 
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.
