Purpose of the Role

BGIS is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical (HVAC) Technician to support mechanical and HVAC services at a nationally significant, heritage-listed precinct in Canberra πŸ›οΈ, along with associated storage facilities nearby.

This role is the on-site point of coordination for mechanical and HVAC activities, combining hands-on technical work with guidance and support for a junior technician. Working closely with BGIS colleagues, specialist contractors, and site stakeholders, you will help ensure services are delivered safely, efficiently, and with care for the operational and heritage sensitivities of the environment.

The ideal candidate enjoys sharing knowledge, takes a considered approach to technical work, and values contributing to places of cultural importance - including access to areas not always visible to the public.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on mechanical and HVAC systems, including AHUs, FCUs, split systems, ventilation and associated plant
  • Diagnose and resolve faults within licence scope, ensuring systems operate safely and efficiently
  • Maintain accurate asset, service, and defect records within the CMMS
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and mentoring to a junior HVAC technician
  • Coordinate workloads to ensure maintenance activities are completed within agreed timeframes
  • Define scopes of work and oversee specialist subcontractors for complex or highly specialised tasks
  • Support first-level monitoring and fault finding for Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • Work collaboratively with site stakeholders, providing clear technical advice and recommendations
  • Ensure all activities align with WHS legislation, BGIS systems, and heritage requirements

Education, Experience & Skills

Essential:

  • Trade qualification in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration or Mechanical Services
  • Current ARCtick Refrigerant Handling Licence
  • Restricted Electrical Licence (ACT)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in a senior or autonomous HVAC technician role (all levels encouraged to apply)
  • Experience maintaining complex commercial HVAC systems
  • Working knowledge of Building Management Systems (BMS)
  • Experience supporting or coordinating other technicians or subcontractors
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-focused approach

Desirable:

  • Experience in heritage, government, defence, or public-facing facilities
  • Exposure to asset management or lifecycle planning
  • Certificate IV in Air Conditioning & Refrigeration
  • Familiarity with BMS platforms such as Honeywell, Siemens, Schneider, or Johnson Controls
  • Additional safety credentials (Working at Heights, Confined Spaces, EWP, First Aid)

Workplace Flexibility

This position is full-time and on-site at a secure and operational location in Campbell, ACT, with free on-site parking and close access to public transport. A vehicle is provided to support site and work requirements.
