Job Description

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to join one of our Mobile Applications Teams within the Engineering and Operations function at zooplus. The role focuses on delivering new features and supporting the evolution of our mobile apps towards modern agile methodologies, technical practices, and architectures.

As an Engineering Manager reporting to the Domain Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for driving efficient product delivery on time and within budget, while guiding the professional growth of your team members. You will actively contribute to shaping a robust technical direction for our products. Your goal is to foster excellence, support career development, ensure processes are followed, and contribute to the overall success of our organisation.

You will work closely with the Product Owner and Domain Architect, and you will own vital aspects of your team's success. In close collaboration with other teams, your team will introduce new features and improvements to provide a better experience for more than 11 million customers.

As our Software Engineering Manager, you will embrace the following responsibilities:

  • Product Vision and Strategy: Contribute to defining the product vision and strategy, considering people, processes, product, and capacity aspects.
  • Product Delivery: Be accountable for the deliverables of the product teams, adhering to timelines and commitments, ensuring scalability and resilience of existing applications, and contributing to overall company goals and strategy.
  • Capacity Planning: Ensure the team has the necessary resources and skills by evaluating workload and identifying potential bottlenecks for successful project delivery.
  • Technical Excellence: Act as an enabler by empowering the team, unlocking their potential, and facilitating progress towards set goals, while proactively identifying and removing technical impediments or obstacles that hinder productivity.
  • People Growth: Take responsibility for the growth of team members by managing performance and providing coaching for individual development. Fostering excellence and supporting career development is one of your crucial goals.
  • Process Management: Create a productive, agile environment, align with other teams, ensure company policies and product/technology processes are well-coordinated, and promote continuous improvement by encouraging architectural best practices and nurturing individual growth.
  • Budget Management: Monitor and optimise budget costs related to product expenses, such as cloud services (e.g., AWS), licences, external resources, training budgets, and personnel costs.

What makes working with us rewarding:

  • We work in self-organised teams following the Scrum methodology, respecting and valuing everyone's opinion.
  • We learn from each other and share knowledge through pair programming, code reviews, and numerous training opportunities.
  • We deliver value by developing new features, maintaining existing products, and improving the infrastructure we need. We value colleagues who enjoy being cross-functional.
  • We are committed to delivering high-quality products and believe that continuous delivery, clean code, and a DevOps mindset are crucial to achieving this goal.
  • Our teams value a friendly and collaborative environment, and we greatly encourage open communication and teamwork. We believe in a team approach and do not assign blame; instead, we work together to build and maintain the system.
  • Our colleagues come from over 50 countries, and our working language is English.

Qualifications

You bring to us the following expertise:

  • A solid understanding of mobile application development principles, including the full mobile application lifecycle (from design and development to deployment and maintenance).
  • Strong software engineering and design fundamentals with hands-on experience with Android and/or iOS platform development (8+ years within software development practices).
  • Familiarity with mobile-specific challenges such as app store submission processes and platform-specific guidelines.
  • Strong communication skills and proven people management experience.
  • Extensive and recent contribution to process improvement, Agile, and Lean fundamentals.
  • Broad experience with software tooling and practices (e.g., wiki and ticketing systems - ideally Atlassian, continuous integration/continuous delivery, release cycles, automation, monitoring, support, and operations).
