Database Administrator (Dba)
Job Description
Data is the new oil. If you run a business, and you want to do anything with your data, the first thing you need to do is create the infrastructure required to store and query that data. This is where Pure Storage comes into play - with a variety of hardware and software solutions to get the maximum out of your data.
Engineering Productivity (EP) is an internal engineering organization working with PureStorage Engineering teams to provide productivity tools and services. We work with Flash Blade engineering teams to provide reliable database infrastructure services that are used to develop new products and features.
As a Database Administrator, you will work to improve the reliability and performance of Pure Storage's critical database systems. You will be part of a team responsible for maintaining highly available database clusters, optimizing performance, and ensuring data integrity across our infrastructure. This means monitoring database health, implementing best practices, and collaborating with development teams to support their data needs.
We are looking for database administrators who are passionate about reliability, performance optimization, and data management.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and support highly available and resilient PostgreSQL and MySQL clusters
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize database performance for low-latency and high-throughput workloads
- Implement and execute backup, recovery, and disaster recovery strategies for databases
- Configure and maintain observability and alerting for proactive issue detection
- Collaborate with development and DevOps teams to implement best practices in schema design, data partitioning, replication, and failover
- Support capacity planning, scaling strategies, and performance tuning initiatives
- Implement security hardening, patching, and compliance measures for all managed database systems
- Provide production on-call support and participate in root cause analysis (RCA) for incidents
- Maintain detailed runbooks for known incidents and contribute to building a comprehensive runbook library
- Evaluate and test new tools, technologies, and architectures to improve reliability and operational efficiency
- Manage database server VMs including critical OS patches and security patches
Minimum Qualifications
- Demonstrated coding and scripting ability with Bash, Python, or similar languages for automation
- Strong expertise in PostgreSQL (performance tuning, replication, partitioning, backup & restore)
- Strong expertise in MySQL (InnoDB, clustering/replication, query optimization)
- Able to work in a 24x7 oncall rotation using a follow the sun model (i.e. 8am to 8pm local time pager duty, approximately 1 week every 2-3 months)
- Systematic problem-solving approach, strong communication skills, and a sense of ownership and drive
- Experience in analyzing performance & debugging database systems in production environments
Preferred Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience managing databases in production environments
- Solid knowledge of Linux system administration and performance tuning
- Understanding of Unix/Linux operating systems
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure automation tools (Ansible, Terraform, Helm, Kubernetes)
- Experience with monitoring/observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK, OpenTelemetry) to comprehend service health and create dashboards
- Experience with Kafka (distributed architecture, topic management, consumer groups, scaling, retention policies)
- Experience with RabbitMQ (clustering, high availability, message routing, monitoring)
- Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and managed database services
- Knowledge of high-scale architectures (multi-region, sharding, streaming pipelines)
- Familiarity with CI/CD integration for database migrations and schema changes
- Well organized, with ability to prioritize tasks and see them to completion
- Strong incident management skills and experience with SLOs and error budgets
What We Offer
- Opportunity to work on business-critical infrastructure
- A collaborative environment where reliability and performance are first-class priorities
- Growth path toward advanced technical roles in data and infrastructure platforms
