Internship
Team Description:
The Battery Cell Performance Optimization team drives the understanding and advancement of Lucid’s cell technology through testing, modeling, validation, design, and analytical characterization. We develop fast-charge and power-capability control strategies informed by real-world data from Lucid’s expanding vehicle fleet to ensure that customer usage is accurately represented. Our work bridges experimental testing with physics-based modeling to uncover the fundamental mechanisms governing cell performance and degradation.
As an intern on this team, you will contribute to integrating real-time electrochemical and data-driven models into cell testing workflows — enabling live visibility into cell health and performance. Your work will directly influence how we validate and optimize next-generation battery systems for efficiency, longevity, and charging speed.
Role/Responsibilities:
As a summer intern on the Battery Cell Engineering team, you’ll work on the following:
Key Deliverables (1-3)
- Successful Integration of Cell Lifetime Model for Cell Hardware-in-Loop (CHIL) Testing
- Quantify the errors between the advanced controls vs actual cell response
Deliverable 1 Detail Steps
- Import the Lifetime Model and build a Model-in-the-Loop (MiL) environment with a cell plant model to validate Lifetime Model outputs.
- Code-generate and build Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) with embedded Lifetime Models, and run tests to estimate the cell’s State of Health (SOH) in real time.
- The candidate should understand how the vehicle’s SOH is estimated using the Lifetime Model and how to validate it within a Model-in-the-Loop framework, ensuring successful integration with the battery tester.
- The candidate will gain hands-on experience in rigorous model validation through testing of lithium-ion cells.
- The candidate will also learn how to compile embedded controls from Simulink and develop test protocols that integrate real-time SOH calculations during fast-charge cell tests.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Enthusiastic, Can-do attitude
- Some fundamental understanding in Li-ion battery cell and experience in battery cell testing
- Familiarity with MATLAB Scripting and Simulink Modelling
- Showcases experience in validating models and identifies the errors vs experimental data, and communicates assumptions of the models
Nice To Have:
- Some experience in battery cell modelling
- Experience in relevant BMS Simulink Code Generation for battery controls development
- Experience in testing with Maccor and Arbin cyclers
Education:
- Field(s) of study: Electrical & Computer Engineering, Electrochemical Science and Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer & Systems Engineering, or related field
- Currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD Degree program at an accredited university
- Proof of enrollment in current or into next program (MS or PhD)
