Position Summary

The Controller for Housing & Real Estate Development provides strategic leadership and hands-on oversight for all financial, accounting, and compliance functions associated with BRC’s housing portfolio and affiliated entities. This includes financial reporting, audits, tax compliance, and real estate financing operations for BRC’s Housing and Housing Development divisions, subsidiaries, and affiliates (including 501(c)(3), HDFC, LP, GP, and LLC entities).

This role ensures that BRC’s housing financial operations and real estate development align with the organization’s mission, fiscal integrity, and long-term development strategy. The Controller collaborates closely with the CFO, Housing Development leadership, external property management teams, and financing partners to maintain strong internal controls, accurate reporting, and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and agreements.

This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Oversight

Utilize knowledge of tax reporting requirements to ensure accurate preparation and review of tax filings for nonprofit, corporate, and partnership tax returns of BRC related entities

  • Oversee the accounting and financial management of all BRC housing and real estate development entities, ensuring timely and accurate recording, reporting, and consolidation of financial data.
  • Develop and maintain robust accounting systems, controls, and policies in accordance with GAAP, and other applicable regulatory frameworks to ensure proper consolidated accounting and reporting for all BRC related entities.
  • Lead producing and preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports for real estate portfolio and BRC’s partners.
  • Review reconciliation of related entity financial statements to parent entity general ledger for completion, accuracy and timeliness.
  • Supervise and review consolidating/eliminating entries and reconciliations across the housing portfolio, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of records and reporting.

Strategic & Operational Partnership

  • Serve as a key financial advisor to the CFO and Housing Development leadership on project structuring, financing, and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Real Estate Development, Property Management, and Program teams to align financial practices with operational goals and funding requirements.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations on new housing developments, acquisitions, and refinancing activities.
  • Coordinate financial reporting and compliance with external partners, investors, lenders, and syndicators.

Audit, Tax & Compliance

  • Lead the preparation and coordination of annual audits for all housing-related entities; serve as the primary liaison with external auditors regarding consolidating/eliminating entries of related entities, as well as providing internal guidance and maintaining proper documentation for decisions on whether to consolidate related entities.
  • Oversee preparation and review of federal, state, and local tax filings for nonprofit, corporate, and partnership tax returns to ensure accurate preparation of BRC related entities.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, contractual, and lender/syndicator financial requirements (including pre-construction, construction, and operational phases).
  • Maintain proper documentation supporting consolidation decisions and inter-entity transactions.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff supporting housing and related entities, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, transparency, and internal controls.

Special Projects

  • Support system upgrades and technology implementations impacting housing financial operations.
  • Contribute to BRC’s broader financial strategy and capital planning.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.

Hours

Full-time 37.5 hours per week

  • Monday-Friday 9am-5:30pm
  • Hybrid - 3 days in office

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred.
  • Minimum 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership or controller-level role.
  • Experience with nonprofit and affordable housing accounting (501(c)(3), HDFC, LP, GP, LLC structures) strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing audits, consolidations, and tax compliance for complex entity structures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Deep knowledge of GAAP, and federal/state tax requirements for nonprofit and housing entities.
  • Strong understanding of real estate finance, low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC), and compliance frameworks.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines with precision.
  • Proficiency with financial software systems and Microsoft Excel; experience with ADP, MIP, or similar systems a plus.
