Duties And Accountabilities

  • Draft pleadings, memoranda, correspondence, cross-examination outlines, submissions and other documents for international arbitration disputes.
  • Guide and review the research, analysis, and presentation of conclusions of law and facts and other relevant sources related to ongoing international arbitrations.
  • Develop international dispute strategy for matters, including investment and commercial arbitration matters and other international disputes.
  • Participate in and conduct witness interviews, client meetings, and hearings.
  • Analyze evidence to develop facts and strategy.
  • Provide direct assistance to partners and senior lawyers on matters arising in the course of day-to-day provision of legal services to leading clients.
  • Utilize knowledge of differences and similarities between civil law, common law, and international law to deliver the services.
  • Support teams in successfully representing Firm’s clients with interests in Latin America.
  • Utilize knowledge of foreign legal systems and procedures to support teams in successfully representing Firm’s clients before international tribunals.
  • Work on complex investment arbitration disputes administered by ICSID and other international arbitration institutions.
  • Conduct factual research and background checks on fact and expert witnesses, arbitrators, and potential arbitrators.
  • Keep abreast of changes in the law (including international investment law).
  • Supervise junior team members on preparing legal memoranda or statements of issues in disputes, with appropriate legal analysis and recommendations.
  • Provide meaningful, specific verbal real-time feedback to juniors and seniors at the end of each client matter.
  • Effectively delegate and manage tasks of junior associates and provide real-time feedback on progress of matter in line with deadlines.
  • Lead communications with clients and opposing counsel on substantive legal issues in the course of international arbitrations.
  • Communicate with international arbitrators and arbitral institutions regarding ongoing disputes and procedural matters.
  • Salary: $310,000-$390,000 per year.

Qualifications

  • LL.M., J.D., or U.S. equivalent in law plus at least 3 years of professional experience as an Attorney, Associate, Law Clerk, Foreign Legal Consultant, or related occupation/position/title providing legal advice at a law firm to corporate clients regarding international arbitration.
  • Must be admitted to the New York State Bar.
  • Must also have experience with the following special skills: 3 years of professional experience supervising legal research, managing document production, and drafting substantive pleadings in international arbitrations (both commercial and investor-State); 3 years of professional experience analyzing procedural and substantive issues arising in international arbitration matters (both commercial and investor-State) and engaging in fact development throughout, including reviewing client documents, preparing expert witnesses, interviewing witnesses, and researching public records; 3 years of professional experience collaborating with senior attorneys and partners on developing case strategy and counseling clients with investments in Latin American jurisdictions; 3 years of professional experience evaluating the legality under international investment treaties of regulations and other measures enacted by governments affecting foreign investments and handling economic and accounting analysis of investments; 3 years of professional experience evaluating international claims under investment protection instruments in connection with government measures affecting foreign investment; and 2 years of professional experience providing legal advice to Latin America clients in a civil law jurisdiction, including advising on Latin America law and arbitration procedures.
