Job Overview

Performs semi-skilled duties involving maintenance and repairs of assigned equipment used in the county’s solid waste collection, and clean-up of facilities and properties prior to, during or after major demolition and construction, to include clean-up of abandoned properties, county’s roads, visible structures and rights-of-way graffiti, debris, litter and spills. The job may involve operating small to medium trucks and possessing a CDL depending on the area of assignment.

Duties And Responsibilities

Note: The following duties are illustrative and not exhaustive. Depending on assigned area of responsibility, incumbents in the position may perform one or more of the activities described below.

  • Provides general maintenance support for county programs and performs repairs on equipment.
  • Operates light to heavy motorized equipment, including a box truck, graffiti truck, dump truck, lightning loader, grapple truck, forklift, mower, and other medium to heavy equipment.
  • Drives a vehicle to and from work sites.
  • Interact with constituents during the performance of daily work transactions.
  • May receive orders and delivers equipment and supplies to various locations within Hillsborough County.
  • May supervise Community Service Workers and/or volunteers for various programs, including joint-effort community programs.
  • May perform clean-up of debris in County rights-of-way.
  • May use ArcGIS software to establish well-organized delivery routes to maximize time efficiencies.
  • May use ServiceNow system to input data for the inventorying of equipment.
  • May operate power equipment to perform both minor and major repairs to equipment to ensure that equipment is in full working order.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Job Specifications

  • Considerable knowledge of procedures and techniques utilized in various general maintenance work.
  • Considerable knowledge of safety procedures and safety equipment. 
  • Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Skill in the use of hand and electrical tools and equipment.
  • Skill in the application of supervisory techniques.
  • Ability to prioritize work.
  • Ability to plan, organize, supervise, and evaluate the work/performance of others. 
  • Ability document own work and work of others.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical tasks. 
  • Ability and willingness to be in an on-call status and respond to call outs, working non-standard duty hours and rotating shifts that include nights, weekends and holidays. 
  • Knowledge of computers and other office equipment and the ability to perform basic data entry.
  • Skill in the operation and loading of heavy equipment, including 30-foot trailers, generators, and light sets.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to operate a standard motor vehicle safely.

Physical Requirements

  • Required to work outside in all types of weather as well as in a standard office environment.
  • Requires standing, walking, bending, climbing, lifting, dragging, and pushing.
  • Required to lift up to 50 lbs.

Work Category

  • Medium Work - Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED Certificate; AND
  • Four years of experience as a maintenance worker; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above; AND
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Note: Certain positions may require a Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with airbrakes to be obtained within the probationary period.

Emergency Management Responsibilities

In the event of an emergency or disaster, an employee may be required to respond promptly to duties and responsibilities as assigned by the employee’s department, the County’s Office of Emergency Management, or County Administration. Such assignments may be for before, during or after the emergency/disaster.

  1. Maintain the ability to pass the background checks required for the position. These background checks may include but are not limited to:
  • Criminal History Background Check using Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS)
  • Level 1 and Level 2 Background screening (Ch. 435 Florida Statutes)
  • Child Abuse, Abandonment and Neglect Record Check using the State Automated Child Welfare Information System (SACWIS)
  • Sex Offender and Sexual Predator record check using the list maintained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE)
  1. Possess the necessary job-related license(s) or certification(s) that may include possession of a Florida Driver License (Class E) or an applicable Commercial Driver License (CDL).
