About this role:
Carrier’s Technology & Components Compression Technology team is seeking a driven, innovative, and self-directed engineer to join our Syracuse, NY location. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in the design of turbomachinery, compressors, engines, or other high-speed rotating equipment, along with familiarity in manufacturing processes such as casting, forging, CNC machining, dynamic balancing, lubrication, and bearings—critical for effective decision-making.

This role involves collaboration with global stakeholders and may require up to 20% travel. Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate dedicated design/drafting teams in compressor design to implement product changes from concept through to production, interfacing with manufacturing and suppliers.
  • Mechanical design and analysis of components such as rotating equipment, rolling element bearings, shaft seals, and pressure containing machined castings.
  • Understand the physics of the compression process and interaction with system to advance existing models improving performance prediction, speed and quality of design.
  • Contribute to the development of physics based thermal and mechanical models of compressors used in HVAC&R systems. Perform model calibration, validation, and physics-based analysis of system behaviors.
  • Complete numerical analysis to simulate compressor system and component performance.
  • Apply knowledge of DOE, FMEA, tolerance analysis, simulation, and statistical methods to improve robustness and quality of compressor designs.
  • Deliver solutions that are most cost effective, efficient, and reliable.  Develop & review qualification plans for components in compressors in situ and at the supplier.
  • Ability to work closely with designers/drafters & participate in drawing reviews.
  • Work closely with lab personnel to develop & execute laboratory test plans.
  • Coordination of components, procurement, inventory and build for first prototype, qualification samples and customer samples.
  • Prepare and present project status reports to management.
  • Ensure products meet applicable Carrier and agency standards.

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School or GED, with 6+ months experience in the engineering field. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Past internship experience with Carrier or HVAC Companies.
  • Experience in the mechanical design of components for rotating or reciprocating machinery such as engines or compressors is desired.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and background should include Mechanics of Materials, Machine Design, Vibration and Statistics or Reliability.
  • Familiarity with common manufacturing processes such as casting, forging, CNC machining, dynamic balancing, lubrication, and bearings is valued for effective decision making.
  • Experience with modeling tools such as MATLAB, Finite Element Analysis, Computational Fluid Dynamics, and/or machine learning techniques is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication. Ability to communicate technical information to stakeholders.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, collaboration, responsibility, dependability, leadership, flexibility, motivation, respect, and persistence.
