About the Role
The Baltimore Banner is seeking a versatile, ambitious sports reporter to cover Baltimore-area sports with depth, creativity, and rigor. From the Orioles’ clubhouse to boxing gyms, horse tracks, and college arenas, you will produce stories that inform, entertain, and resonate with readers—while helping grow our subscriber base.

This is a role for a journalist who can break news with authority, craft deeply reported profiles and enterprise pieces, and combine storytelling with data-driven insights. You’ll cover the business of sports, explore cultural and community impact, and help readers understand both the game and the world around it.

What You’Ll Do

  • Break significant sports news, from Orioles headlines to high-profile local sports events.
  • Serve as the backup Orioles reporter, traveling to ~35% of away games and attending ~60% of home games (adjusted based on breaking news and story potential).
  • Produce compelling features, profiles, and enterprise pieces that reveal the “why” behind the action.
  • Monitor the local sports scene, uncovering stories our readers didn’t know they wanted. Stay current on news surrounding local stars like Angel Reese and Gervonta Davis to produce unique coverage.
  • Collaborate with The Banner’s engagement and data teams to maximize audience reach and impact across platforms.
  • Partner with editors and reporters across coverage areas where sports intersect business, culture, and community.
  • Engage audiences via video, podcasts, and social media to build a vibrant, interactive connection with readers.

What You’Ll Bring:

  • 2 or more years of professional journalism experience, ideally covering sports.
  • Be a storyteller at heart, able to make complex topics compelling and accessible.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while maintaining meticulous accuracy and fact-checking.
  • A strong news judgment and a keen sense of what readers want.
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and energized by working with teams across the newsroom.
  • Comfortable working nights and weekends as stories unfold.
  • Strategic and organized, with excellent planning and time-management skills.
  • Understand how to use data, social media, and SEO to grow digital audiences.
  • Data reporting skills or Spanish language ability are a plus.
  • A commitment to journalistic integrity, ethics, and audience trust.

Looking for a way to stand out? Submit a resume and cover letter outlining your vision for balancing Orioles coverage with other sports topics that will best serve subscribers. Include 2-3 samples of stories that best illustrate your storytelling skills.
