Jira Platform Developer (Independant Contractor Engagement)

Location: Bogota, Colombia (Remote friendly)

Robots & Pencils is seeking a Jira Platform Developer to design, optimize, and extend an enterprise-scale Atlassian ecosystem supporting more than 45,000 users across 900 Jira and Confluence instances. This role combines platform development, system integration, and process automation to build scalable, resilient systems that enable delivery of excellence.

As a systems and delivery engineer, you’ll partner with platform administrators, developers, and PMO teams to modernize existing configurations, automate key workflows, and implement governance frameworks that drive efficiency and sustainability. You’ll play a critical role in transforming a complex, fragmented toolset into a unified, high-performance platform for enterprise collaboration and execution.

Key Responsibilities

Platform Engineering & Development

  • Design, develop, and deploy advanced automation and integration solutions across Jira Software, Jira Service Management, and Confluence.
  • Extend platform functionality through scripting, APIs, and marketplace apps (e.g., ScriptRunner, Automation for Jira).
  • Implement modular, reusable configurations that scale across hundreds of projects and teams.
  • Collaborate with administrators to streamline project setup, configuration, and maintenance workflows.
  • Build and maintain reusable templates, connectors, and governance modules for faster and more consistent delivery.

Process Automation & Optimization

  • Translate complex delivery and ITSM processes into maintainable, automated Jira workflows.
  • Identify and remove friction points, reducing manual intervention across project lifecycles.
  • Develop dashboards, metrics, and analytics to improve visibility and decision-making.
  • Support initiatives to consolidate and rationalize redundant workflows, statuses, and custom fields.

System Integration & Governance

  • Engineer integrations between Jira, Confluence, and other enterprise systems (e.g., GitHub, ServiceNow, Slack).
  • Establish governance frameworks for consistent roles, permissions, and data structures.
  • Conduct system audits to ensure configuration of health, data integrity, and compliance with enterprise standards.
  • Partner with IT and Security to enforce data protection, access control, and change management policies.

Collaboration & Knowledge Enablement

  • Work closely with platform administrators and cross-functional stakeholders to define scalable solutions.
  • Document system architecture, automation logic, and configuration standards.
  • Provide enablement and training for admins and power users to support distributed administration.
  • Participate in platform roadmap planning and contribute to long-term scalability and modernization efforts.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience developing or administering Jira Software, Jira Service Management, and Confluence at enterprise scale.
  • Proficiency with Jira automation, REST APIs, and scripting (Groovy, Python, or similar).
  • Experience designing and maintaining complex workflows, schemes, and permission models.
  • Familiarity with Agile, ITSM, and DevOps delivery methodologies.
  • Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to architect scalable, maintainable systems that balance governance with flexibility.
  • Advanced level of spoken and written English

Nice To Have

  • Atlassian Certified Professional – Jira Administration or equivalent certification.
  • Experience with ScriptRunner, Forge, or Connect app development.
  • Background integrating Jira with CI/CD, cloud, or analytics tools.
  • Experience with Atlassian Cloud, Data Center migrations, or rationalization initiatives.
  • Knowledge of ITSM/ITIL frameworks and enterprise governance practices.

Personal Competencies

  • Builder Mindset – You create systems that evolve and scale, not just maintain them.
  • Operational Craft – You bring structure, automation, and precision to complex ecosystems.
  • Collaboration – You work seamlessly with teams to co-design sustainable solutions.
  • Clarity & Empathy – You make tools intuitive and documentation accessible.
  • Ownership – You take initiative, deliver reliability, and elevate the platform’s impact.
  • Adaptability – You thrive in dynamic, high-volume enterprise environments.

Why Join Robots & Pencils?

At Robots & Pencils, we design systems that accelerate innovation on a scale.
