Job Summary
Under the direction of the Safety Superintendent, the Senior Safety Specialist supports Kettle River Operations (KRO) and MSHA-regulated health and safety programs. As a subject matter expert in hazard identification, risk mitigation, and emergency preparedness, the incumbent works collaboratively across all departments to integrate safety into daily operations. Essential Functions
- Ensure compliance with all applicable MSHA, federal, state, and company safety regulations.
- Conduct regular inspections, audits, and risk assessments across all KRO sites; track and follow up on corrective actions.
- Lead investigations of incidents and near-misses; analyze root causes and recommend preventative measures.
- Develop and deliver safety training programs for employees, contractors, including annual refresher training MSHA Part 48 requirements.
- Assist in establishing goals and objectives regarding the development and implementation of Health and Safety programs.
- Maintain and review safety documentation including training records, inspection logs, and incident reports.
- Assist in developing and updating the site’s safety management system (SMS) and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Support IH/OH programs and coordinate monitoring as required.
- Prepare and submit required MSHA documentation and reports.
- Participate in emergency response drills and assist in updating site emergency response plans.
- Collaborate with operational leadership on job hazard analyses (JHAs), change management, and risk assessments.
- Establish and maintain good relations with peers, supervisors, and employees and promote positive attitudes, safe work practices and adherence to safe work standards.
- Lead by example, provide guidance, and motivate employees to work safely.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures.
- Meet or exceed the performance expectations established by management.
- Punctuality and regular attendance required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications And Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or suitable combination of experience and education.
- 5+ years of experience working in Health and Safety. 3 years of experience in an MSHA regulated environment. Underground hardrock mining experience preferred.
- Applied knowledge of relevant OSHA, MSHA, state and other regulatory requirements, as-well-as industry standards and practices.
- MSHA Part 48 “blue card” certified trainer.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar experience.
- Proven experience conducting investigations, hazard assessments, and safety training.
- Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal and analytical skills.
- Capability to work in both office and field environments.
- Experienced using MS Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams).
- Requires valid US driver’s license.
