Medical Secretary - Bronson Internal Medicine Hospital Specialists - Battle Creek, MIThe Medical Secretary transcribes the doctors' dictation of chart notes and letters; composes letters and types form letters regarding patients' failed appointments; copies and sends records to other doctors, attorneys, and insurance companies; fills out various types of insurance forms from information contained in charts. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required
6-12 months coding experience in a health care setting preferred
• Must have working knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding with emphasis on area of specialty working in
• Strong medical terminology
• Ability to utilize word processing, spreadsheet, presentation programs, databases, and other software relevant to the job
• Must have excellent communication skills (orally, face to face and/or by telephone, and in writing) and a positive customer relations orientation
• Must be able to work independently and demonstrate effective problem-solving
Work which is constantly and exceptionally tiring mentally and/or visually. Conditions exist more than 90% of the work time.
Involves considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (i.e., 20 pounds or less) and assisting with heavier tasks such as assisting in lifting and moving patients. Minor straining or fatiguing positions must be assumed, and some fatiguing physical motions are required.
• Surgery Scheduling
o Perform surgery scheduling of patients for physicians in the practice with appropriate surgery department and block appropriate time in office.
o Obtain insurance authorizations for surgical cases.
o Obtain necessary documents and/or testing for patients.
o Coordinate surgery scheduling with other physicians.
o Communicate surgery date and time with patients and physicians.
• Professional Billing
o Reviews work queues and/or posts charges into Practice Management System for provider hospital and office billing, and/or simple surgery cases, validating documentation with correct dates of service and confirming selection of appropriate diagnosis codes.
• Scheduling Templates/Call Schedules
o Relays messages to providers
o Assists with CME transactions
o Schedules meetings/appointments for providers
o Inputs/distribute call/meeting schedules, etc.
o Manages office scheduling templates
• Maintain necessary spreadsheets tracking authorizations and surgical case/procedures
• General clerical duties including internal/external correspondence and answering telephones.
• Completes required forms or letters as necessary.
• Performs other duties as may be assigned.
