How will you make an impact in this role?

As the Principal Engineer for Global Dining, you will be the most senior technical leader across the Resy, Tock, and Rooam engineering organizations. Partnering directly with the CTO of Global Dining, you will drive the long-term architecture, ensure technical excellence across platforms, and guide the evolution of our global hospitality ecosystem. You’ll influence the technical direction for how we unify core services, and deliver scalable, reliable, high-performance systems that power millions of diners using consumer-facing dining experiences and thousands of restaurants and wineries.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Architect the future of dining platforms: Define and evolve the unified platform architecture spanning consumer-facing dining apps, restaurant and winery management systems, POS integrations, and partner APIs across Resy, Tock, and Rooam. 
  • Drive scalability and reliability: Lead the design of distributed, event-driven systems and service architectures capable of supporting global scale and real-time experiences. 
  • Technical leadership: Partner with product, data, and design leaders to shape strategic initiatives that advance the dining ecosystem. 
  • Elevate the consumer experience: Partner with product, design, and data leaders to create seamless, personalized dining experiences that integrate discovery, booking, and payments. 
  • Guide modernization: Lead efforts to modernize legacy systems, consolidate tech stacks, and strengthen core infrastructure and observability. 
  • Cross-platform integration: Define interfaces and shared platform capabilities across Resy, Tock, and Rooam to enable cohesive experiences and interoperability across consumer and merchant products. 
  • Mentorship and culture: Coach staff and senior engineers , raising the bar for technical excellence, craftsmanship, and innovation. 
  • Partner with Amex enterprise teams: Ensure alignment with Amex-wide architectural frameworks, cloud standards, and security policies while preserving product velocity. 
  • Evaluate emerging technologies: Identify and advocate for innovations in cloud infrastructure, AI/ML, payments, and data platforms that could transform the dining experience. 

Core Technical Skills

  • Deep expertise in large-scale distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, and microservices design. 
  • Proven experience building consumer-facing mobile and web applications with real-time data and rich user experiences. 
  • Advanced proficiency in AWS (preferred), GCP, or equivalent cloud ecosystems. 
  • Strong hands-on background with microservices, GraphQL, Kubernetes, containerization, and observability tooling. 
  • Experience with high-performance APIs, mobile backends, and data-intensive services. 
  • Strong coding background in Java or Python, with modern frameworks and tools. 

Leadership & Strategic Skills 

  • Recognized as a technical authority capable of influencing across multiple engineering teams. 
  • Demonstrated success guiding multi-organization architectures and large-scale platform migrations. 
  • Exceptional ability to translate abstract vision into executable, phased technical roadmaps. 
  • Experienced in mentoring Staff and Senior Engineers and driving cultural change through engineering excellence. 
  • Strong communication and storytelling skills with the ability to present complex trade-offs to senior leadership. 
  • Collaborative and pragmatic approach to decision-making, balancing innovation with execution. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3+ years as a Principal Engineer / Distinguished Engineer at a large-scale tech organization  
  • Proven experience leading architecture for consumer internet platforms, B2B SaaS systems, or transactional ecosystems at scale. 
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with executive leadership to define and deliver strategic technology vision. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. 
  • Experience in consumer facing, commerce, or marketplace platforms.
  • Salary Range: $219,000.00 to $338,250.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with executive leadership to define and deliver strategic technology vision. 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. 
  • Experience in consumer facing, commerce, or marketplace platforms.
