Position Description
Transportation Engineer I:
Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
Transportation Engineer II:
Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Transportation Engineer III:
Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Transportation Engineer IV:
Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
Essential Duties:
Transportation Engineer I:
- Coordinates on design schematics, assists with traffic and safety studies, and reviews in-house and consultant developed traffic simulation, safety analyses, and intersection/interchange projects.
- Coordinates traffic engineering studies and traffic counts.
- Makes on-site engineering reviews and analysis, and provides technical support to districts.
- Performs and reviews conceptual design, capacity analyses, traffic simulations, and safety analyses associated with Interstate Access Justification
- Reports, Design Exceptions, alternative analysis, and other processes in support of preliminary and final design.
- Provides traffic engineering support for districts in project development.
- Drives/travels to project/work locations as required.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.Transportation Engineer II: All of the above and:
- Provides technical inputs with the updates to Division policies and guidance as it relates to traffic and safety analysis including updates to manual.
- Provides technical inputs with updates to Interstate projects guidance.
- Utilizes project management principles in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling and closing for transportation projects.Transportation Engineer III: All of the above and:
- Participates in the training of engineering and district staff
- Develops technical presentations
- Acts in an advisory capacity and answers technical questions regarding highway capacity analysis, traffic simulation and safety modeling and analysis , and intersection/interchange analysis/evaluation to support project development.Transportation Engineer IVAll of the above and:
- Develops and makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
- Negotiates fees and budgets, develops and negotiates scopes of work, negotiates contract work schedules, monitors consultants' progress and work quality, checks invoices and associated documents, prepares supplemental agreements, monitors the consultant's compliance with the terms of the contract, as consultant project manager.
