TxDOT’s Tyler District is looking for a General Engineering Tech I or II in our Traffic Office, located at District Headquarters. As a General Engineering Tech, you will inspect construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build roadway signs, pavement marking, and related structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
We offer company-sponsored CDL training with $0 upfront monetary commitment. Earn your full salary while training with lodging, transportation and per-diem provided if necessary.
Salary Range:
- General Engineering Tech I : (A19) $48,244 - $76,028
- General Engineering Tech II : (A20) $51,158 - $81,351

Position Description
Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
General Engineering Tech I:
- Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
- Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
- Operates light and heavy equipment; performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
- Reviews and coordinates with area engineers on monthly and final estimates, field changes, supplemental agreements,
- extra work orders and revised estimates of quantities.
- Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure
- contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans
- and specifications.
- Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for
- devices, safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- Monitors and/or maintains construction records to ensure contractors comply with federal requirements regarding Equal
- Employment Opportunity, on-the-job training programs, the Historically Underutilized Business and the Disadvantaged
- Business Enterprise programs.
- Researches plan sets and reviews proposed construction plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) and supporting
- documents for accuracy and completeness to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, policies, procedures and
- design guidelines.
- Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors
- lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup and coordinates with the Public
- Information Officer.
General Engineering Tech II all the above and:
- Consults with contractors' superintendent on work progress and maintenance problems; reviews equipment utilization
- data and time/cost estimates.
- Serves as project leader responsible for construction inspection activities for large and/or complex construction projects
- or for multiple district construction projects.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
- Experience:
- General Engineering Tech I: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience.
- General Engineering Tech II: 6 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience
(Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).
Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses And Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License Class "A" or "B", or obtain a Class "A" Commercial License within 180 days of hire

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions:
- Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to noise
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance from one work site to another
- Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
- Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment
