What is Health Information Technology?
Health Information Technology (HIT) is the area of IT involving the design, build, use, & maintenance of information systems in the healthcare industry. HIT improves the efficiency & quality of care that nurses & physicians provide by implementing user-friendly applications for the clinical staff to adopt & operate within. Our goal here at IU Health’s (IUH) IS department is to provide you a deeper understanding of one of the teams below that best fits you, but also still provide you high-level exposure to all the areas of HIT in our organization.
Which Health Information Technology area speaks to you?
Clinical Information Services
- Build and maintain Cerner, IUH’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, & other CIS applications
- Collaborate with hospital leadership & clinical staff to ensure Cerner & other CIS tools meet their needs
- Create tools that help doctors, nurses, & patients communicate outside the hospital & doctor office
Enterprise Analytics
- Promote self-service analytics to place more actionable data in the hands of those who need it
- Gather expertise around the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Azure, & other infrastructure components to support ongoing analytics initiatives
- Execute, monitor, & optimize large data loads to build a single source of truth from application data across IUH
Demand Management
- Provide standardized, sustainable processes for collecting, prioritizing, & preliminarily sizing new projects & needs to incorporate into the IIS portfolio
- Collaborate internally & externally to standardize IIS Contracts & Procurement actions & activities as a part of Vendor Management
- Project prioritization & alignment with IUH strategies & strategic enablers
Enterprise Business Applications
- Supports System Services business areas (Marketing, Accreditation, Finance, HCM, ISC etc.)
- Utilize technical & project management skills to develop, deliver, & support applications using skills of Support, Business, & Quality Analysts, Developers, Solution Architects, System Admin, Security Admin etc.
- Build and support applications for Finance, Human Resources, Employee Benefits, Payroll, Supply Chain, Legal, eHealth, & IUH Physicians
- Support applications include some of the following- Kronos, EPSi, PeopleFluent, Physician Information Exchange, & Oracle
Network Infrastructure
- Deploy & support the IT infrastructure for the organization, which includes enterprise network, voice & wireless infrastructure, compute, storage, virtualization, device management, service management, content, & productivity management
- Deploy & support technologies that implement our cybersecurity policies
- Major vendors include Cisco, Dell/EMC, VMWare, Microsoft
Information Security & Compliance
The Information Security & Compliance team's mission is to collaborate with stakeholders at IUH, IU School of Medicine, & with our business partners to address Information Risk Management as part of standard business practices. The primary functions of our InfoSec department are Compliance, Third-Party Risk, Offensive Security, Risk Assessment, Threat Intelligence, Digital Forensics, Incident Response, security consulting & advising
- Provide risk management, processes, & policies to support teams to ensure they securely configure, test, & assess devices, applications, & IT services
- Apply cyber security skills to defend & prevent against issues such as compromised user accounts, network security events, & organization-wide phishing scams
- Protect the confidentiality, integrity, & availability of IUH data from those with malicious intent
Project & Portfolio Management
- Provides oversite & accountability in the planning, execution, & implementation of IUH projects to ensure that each project is delivered on-time, at/under budget, & delivers agreed upon scope
- Utilize standard project & portfolio management processes to ensure projects are executed & delivered efficiently & with the highest degree of quality
- Develop clear & concise project & portfolio status reports to keep key Stakeholders & Executives informed of schedules, budgets, risks, and issues
PMO Regional Strategic Projects
- Focus on delivering technologies for large scale Design/Construction & IUH Strategic Projects supporting IUH strategies and objectives, projects are either regionally based or have programs tied to IUH strategic pillars
Clinical Informatics and Education
The IU Health Clinical Informatics and Education team’s mission is to promote understanding, integration, and application of information technology to empower our clinical teams to provide excellent patient care and clinical outcomes
- Provide “at-the-elbow” support with the electronic medical record for clinical end-users, creating and providing training to clinical team members
- Translate clinical needs into technical capabilities
- Develop, instruct, and optimize clinical workflows within the electronic medical record
End User Compute (EUC) and Datacenter Operations
Device Management Platform (End User Compute)
Description: The Device Management Platform (DMP) team supports the configuration and management desktop and laptop endpoints using Microsoft platforms (SCCM, Intune, BitLocker). The DMP team also supports the management and configuration of mobile devices (iPhones, iPads, user-owned devices accessing IUH resources) using Microsoft Intune and Workspace One platforms
- Virtual Desktop Platform (End User Compute)
- The Virtual Desktop Platform (VDP) team supports the configuration and management of IUH’s virtual platforms including virtual desktops (VDI) and virtual application delivery using VMware tools (Horizon, App Volumes, Horizon Published Apps). The VDP team also supports VDI hardware configuration (IGEL and Dell thin clients) and Imprivata badge-tap access
- Data Center Operations
- The Data Center Operations team manages IUH’s server environment, including two physical datacenters, Intel-based and Unix-based servers, an Azure tenant, sever backup solutions (Rubrik), and data storage. The Data Center Operations team uses VMware tools including vROPS, vRealize, and NSX-T.
- The Virtual Desktop Platform (VDP) team supports the configuration and management of IUH’s virtual platforms including virtual desktops (VDI) and virtual application delivery using VMware tools (Horizon, App Volumes, Horizon Published Apps). - Research data analytics and ML Model building research
- Projects such as disease progression, outcomes, treatment patterns, etc. requiring technical skills (Python, SQL,
R Studio, Etc.)
How can you help in the mission of IU Health’s Information Services?
All interns are not only assigned to a specific area, but also a specific project that the team is working on to fully experience the application of the tasks involved. Interns will collaborate with leadership and other team members during their time spent in Information Services. They will actively participate in team meetings and report out on assigned projects and initiatives. Interns will be responsible for items such as data collection, managing project logistics, preparing project materials, and communicating across multiple teams. Internship assignments are comprised of exposure to many parts of the business function, providing the opportunity to gain high level healthcare industry knowledge, better understanding of departmental concepts, and sustained outcomes for Informatics and Information Service teams and department leaders.
