Job Knowledge:

To fulfill the requirements of this position, the incumbent is encouraged to have a certification by an agency which is deemed acceptable by the Laboratory Medical Director.  It is desirable for the incumbent to possess a bachelor’s degree.  Previous clinical Medical Technology experience in the hospital setting is preferred.  It is highly desirable that the incumbent possess good communication skills in order to effectively communicate with inter and intra departmental employees, physicians and their office personnel, and public.  The incumbent must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills needed to proficiently provide care to a patient population to include infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

To fulfill the requirements of this position, the incumbent must possess the skills necessary to navigate various web sites including but not limited to multiple reference laboratories, blood suppliers, proficiency testing providers, multiple laboratory reagent suppliers, the OCH portal, the OCH document repository, and the hospital's electronic medical records system. The incumbent must possess the skills necessary to work within the clinical application of the hospital's electronic medical records system in order to accurately document laboratory results.

Leadership:

This position has the primary accountability for organizing and performing accurate, prompt, and cost-effective laboratory testing to assure valid test results as well as effectively communicating these results to appropriate parties.

Human Relations Skills:

The incumbent will have extensive contact with inter and intra departmental personnel, various outside vendor suppliers, physicians and their office personnel, and public.  It is imperative that he/she have good communication skills and reflect a positive, caring attitude toward both staff and public.

Problem Solving

Maintains a high level of accuracy in intricate, detailed laboratory testing, preparation of statistical reports, inventory control, and other quality control data/reports. 

Staying in compliance with hospital policies/procedures and criterion established by various legal and regulatory accrediting bodies.

Freedom To Act:

The incumbent is expected to make decisions in the following areas without submitting for prior approval:  performing various laboratory testing techniques in an accurate, timely, and cost effective manner; properly recording test results; obtaining specimens and rejecting improper specimens; adhering to general safety and infection control standards; conducting daily supplies inventory; adhering to hospital policies/procedures; utilizing supplies/equipment in a cost effective manner; maintaining the security of confidential patient related information; and, performing other duties as assigned in a caring manner to better facilitate the hospital's Mission, Vision, and Goals.

Physical Requirements

Occasional lifting required infrequently of items not to exceed 10 pounds.  This position requires some walking both inter and intra departmentally for the purpose of patient care.

Confidentiality, Privacy and Security

Oktibbeha County Hospital will train the incumbent on all aspects of the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA).  HIPPA training and Certification are requirements of this position. The incumbent will adhere to all security and patient confidentiality rules and regulations mandated by the Federal Government and the State of Mississippi.  Upon commencement of employment, the employee must sign a patient Confidentiality and Security Agreement and abide by the Oktibbeha County Hospital Security and Confidentiality, Privacy and Security Policies and Procedures. Failure to adhere to HIPPA Standards, Oktibbeha County Hospital Security and Confidentiality policies, and those set forth by the United States Federal Government, and the State of Mississippi will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination
